Aussieland to Frankfurt- Across the Indian
August 20, 2008
Well, after 19 hours flying, little sleep and a few movies later we are here. Had a quick stopover in Dubai where, due to Annas grandparents kindly letting us use their frequent flier points, we were upgraded to business on the Dubai-Frankfurt leg and subsequently could utilise the cool business class lounge! An all you can eat buffet, wide screen plasma showing the olympics and free showers awaited us.
Just spent the afternoon chilling, organising our rail passes for the trip to Amsterdam on Thursday which actually turned out to be quite a challenge due to the Haupbahnhoff being very large and confusing, apparently its the largest rail station in Europe and i can believe it. Went to pick up some groceries as well however you have to PAY to use the trolleys, there are no bags and we spent quite an amount of time trying to decipher the german signs which was actually quite amusing (and from the looks from our fellow shoppers, to them too!)
After waking up early this morning we decided to walk into the city centre from the Haupbahnhoff (central railway which is 300m down the road from our hotel.) This turned out to be an excellent decision and gave us a different view of the city. Yesterdays frankfurt was one of drizzle, cold and darkness. Today however, my opinion has changed. So we walked down from west frankfurt to the east of the city near the Frankfurt zoo. Outside is a nice little botanical garden and fountain where we stopped to rest after 2 hours of walking and to observe the Frankfurtian lifestyle. Frankfurt doesnt have any real 'major' attractions so it was back to walking. From the zoo, we made our way down to the river which divides the airport side of Frankfurt with the main city. So we had a nicelittle stroll along the River Main, breaking for lunch and more people watching.
Tonight (if it stops raining) we are thinking of venturing down to the river again for the Frankurt flim festival however at the moment its quite cold and drizzling so might give that a miss.
A point about Germany: They are insane drivers! After nearly colliding with several cars on the way from the airport, i asked dennis what the speed limit was. No speed limit was the reply and apparentlz 180km-hr is slow. Well, coming from a country where the max speed is 110....hmmm....
