Opening my eyes in Miami...

Miami Travel Blog › entry 2 of 17 › view all entries

At home we don't celebrate Thanksgiving and I always wanted to experience it. Back in June I talked about it to a friend and he kindly invited me to spend TG at his hometown. Could a city girl become a country one? These holidays have been more about resting and relaxing. I needed this time. By the way, when I'm going back home, I'm not doing it alone, he might join me in Lima, so this blog will have a second chapter ;)

Opening my eyes in Miami...

I feel so lonely... but she will come back for me. I have the Inca Kola!!!
The flight lasted 6 hrs more less. It was pretty comfortable though. I usually avoid the window seats, but this time I didn't have any option. Nevermind, I was so tired than could sleep most of the flight, haha. Wow. Lan is a good airline. I think they are doing it better every time. The service was great and also was nice having a glass of wine, hehe.

I arrived to Miami at 6:30 approximately. It never took me so long to clear customs. It was sooooo slow. Took forever!!! While I was doing the line I met an Argentinean couple. They were taking a cruise to Bahamas and would also do some shopping in Miami. I told them I was visiting a friend and that I would do some shopping but the Black Friday - Friday after Thanksgiving - when there are a lot of sales, haha.
ocean....
They took note of my advice and asked me for tips regarding shopping in the area. I gave them a couple and the wife asked me if I'd like to join them for the shopping tour, haha.

The customs officer spoke Spanish, like almost everyone at the airport, haha. He asked me where I was going and couldn't believe I said Michigan. "Are you sure? Isn't it gonna be cold?" "Yes, I know it! ;)" Finally I was ready with customs almost at 8!!! Hey! they did it again, they gave me 6 months - haha they like the little Peruvian :) I went to the bagage claim and there were a couple of lonely bags still remaning... Then I had to go from A to E in order to recheck my bag. Wow! It was a long way, haha. Plus I was the only one carrying a coat in hot Miami. I was so glad I was wearing a no sleeves top; otherwise I'd have died, haha. Then I went to my gate.

In my way I got a cup of coffee and tried to make my cellphone works... no luck... nevermind, I was already in my way to Mancelona - MI...

Always busy Miami's Airport - MIA
Busy Miami’s Airport – MIA

I’ve been at this airport back in 2002 but also recently. It’s amazing how this airport has been growing. There are new terminals, which are supposed to make things easier and faster but even though…
Well, I suppose I have to write the review impartial, but am not a huge fan of Miami’s airport. Here are my impressions and recommendations.

Bad or not so nice things:
-Miami’s airport is a hub so it’s reasonable it’s always crowded (doesn’t matter the time or day) but it looks a bit chaotic to me.
-Don’t be surprised if customs take a long time. At least if does so if you aren’t an American Citizen. Just take a deep breath and leave enough time if you have to make a connection flight.
-Because of all the international flights coming and leaving the security is stronger than at other airports. So be patient and smile.
-The airport grew recently. There are new terminals but walking from one to another can take time, specially if you have to carry / roll your big bag. So be sure you have enough time. I had to run a couple of times and wasn’t very funny, hehe. Well, it was :P
-If you have a late flight, don’t expect the shops to be opened. They close around 9pm and won’t open until 8am next morning.

Good things:
-Miami’s airport became modern
-They have a shuttle service to the TRI-Rail station

Facts that can surprise you:
-Miami’s airport looks to me more like a Latinamerican airport than an American one. Almost everyone there speaks Spanish, sure English is the official language, but sometimes I found more people speak Spanish.
-Miami is really hot, but at the airport it could be a bit cool – at the gates – due to the a/c

Despite missing a flight, almost missing another and other stuff, I also had great experiences here. So, it's up to everyone.
