My new girlfriend, Melissa, and I each had a week off in August, and decided to spend some of it seeing the sights in Maine! Old Orchard Beach, Mount Desert Island, Sunrise at Cadillac Mountain, A Whale Watch from Bar Harbor, Hiking "The Bubbles", balanced rock, Hiking around Jordon Pond, and lunch and Popovers at Jordon Pond House, and all the attractions along the 20 mile park loop road of Acadia National Park! ...And of course- Lobster dinner every night!

Bar Harbor

Days Inn, Bar Harbor

We arrived in Bar Harbor around mid afternoon, and checked into the Days Inn on Eden Street.  Just a few minutes outside of downtown Bar Harbor, this location would be an excellent "home base" for us for the next couple of days.  I chose this hotel for it's location, price, and good reviews I had read online.   Located across the street from a ferry line to Nova Scotia, our room was on the upper (top) floor, with an ocean view. Melissa and I  unpacked and got settled in, then we got showered, dressed and ready to go out into town to walk around and find a nice place for dinner.  The hotel had provided a book of area businesses and restaurants, and the lobby had a rack of brochures of local things to do, like whale watching.

We drove in to town, and we were able to find a parking lot (free!) that was alongside one of the main streets, with several nice restaurants side by side, alternated with gift and curio shops.  Each restaurant had its menu posted outside on the window, door, or in a glass frame at street level.  This allowed us to go from  place to place to find something that fit our mood.  Being that it was our first night in Maine, of course we wanted lobster!

We settled on a place called Testas, which offered a complete lobster dinner special.  They started with traditional New England clam chowder, a salad, a basket of assorted breads w/ butter,  then a classic Maine Lobster with drawn butter and a side of long grain rice.

THAT's what we've been waiting for!
Very nice!  Then, they finished it off with Maine blueberry pie a-la-mode.  Yum!!  and, it was all for about $25 per dinner.  It was delicious, and filled us up nicely!   After a big meal like that, we decided to stroll around town after that to "walk it off".  We walked up and down the streets, which were crowded with throngs of tourists, looking in the various gift shops.  We also walked along the waterfront a bit, and saw places like the Bar Harbor Whale Watch company, which we planned to check out tomorrow.  Eventually, we decided to head back to the hotel, as we planned to get up before dawn tomorrow to see the sunrise.   I called to make a reservation for an 8:30 am whale watch.  Should be no problem to catch that...since we were planning to get up at 4:30 am!

Great read about one of my favorite places on the East Coast. You should see the place in November after all of the tourists leave, it truly is a different world hanging with the locals.

Cheers,
Jason

Days Inn, Bar Harbor
We chose to stay at the Bar Harbor Days Inn because of its location on Mt Desert Island and close proximity to the downtown Bar Harbor shopping district. Resonably priced for its location, (a little over $500 for 3 nights, for 2 adults) It was a great starting point to explore Acadia National Park. The nearest hotels we could find in the same price range were on the mainland, about 7 miles away... so this was much more conveniant. Located across the street from the "CAT" ferry to Nova Scotia, it is a two-level hotel, with all rooms facing the ocean. Clean, comfortable rooms, with a hair dryer and coffee maker in each room. They said that they had a pool and fitness room that we could use located in their sister hotel across the street and down the road a bit, but we never got motivated enough to check it out. They also offered a continental breakfast every morning, with muffins, toast, cereal, yougurt, fruit cups, hard boiled eggs, english muffins, etc. as well as fresh fruit, like apples, pears and banannas. A nice place, we would stay here again!

Testa's Restaurant
We walked up and down Main St in Bar Harbor reading all the outside menus, and found what we wanted at Testas. We were told there was about a 10-15 minute wait to be seated upstairs, but we could be seated downstairs immediately, so we chose that option. (There are great views of Bar Harbor from upstairs if you get a window seat) They had a "Maine Special" meal, which consisted of a basket of different kinds of bread, a salad, New England Clam Chowder, Maine Lobster with drawn butter and a side of long grain wild rice, and to finish it off, Maine blueberry pie ala-mode. They brought each course out just as we finished the previous helping, with no waiting in between. The wait staff was friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious! And, it was all only about $25 per dinner... very affordable for what we got. Overall, we had a great dining experiance here, so much that we went back again for the same meal on our last night in Bar Harbor!

You are correct, Vance! There has been a Testa's Restaurant in Palm Beach since 1921! And no, we never made it to New Old Lompoc Cafe

Are these the folks who also have a restaurant somewhere in Florida? Know I've eaten here, but it's been too long.

Did you get to the New Old Lompoc Cafe???
