7:15 am Go to Milford Sound for cruise along fjord and see Bowen and Stirling Falls, Mount Pembroke and the Remarkables Range.  Return to Queenstown around 7:00 pm. 8:00 pm Farewell Reception at hotel.

If I thought the scenery had been spectacular before, today I found out that it could get even better.  We went to Milford Sound, and even though it's north and not far from Queenstown (as the crow flies),  it’s a long drive by the time you get around the mountainous spine of the island.

Kea in flight
The bus took us to the south to Te Anau (great shopping there by the way) before heading north along the Fiordland National Park.

My husband and I sat in the back of the bus across from Leslie and Dave.  Leslie and I kept jumping from one side of the bus to the other ("musical chairs" without music so I guess it was "photo-op chairs"), trying to get photos of the unbelievable scenery on both sides of the bus.   (I’m including enough photos for today to make up for the two previous days lack.)

We photographed the Kea birds hanging out near a tunnel.   These birds seem attracted to anything shiny and (according to a newspaper) are currently developing lead poisoning from eating flashing from the ever present tin roofs.  The Kea we saw were in more danger of developing whiplash from trying to attack windshield wipers and car rooftops.

Mirror Lake
The birds look sort of muddy green until they fly and then you see the bright orange feathers under the wing.

Emerging on the other side of the tunnel into fog, we stopped next to see Mirror Lake and then the Chasm before taking a boat ride through Milford Sound.  The 10 mile long fiord has mile-high mountains plunging straight into a deep fiord.  Young fur seals hang out on the rocks and waterfalls cascade down the mountainsides.  This is one of the few places on earth where the worse the weather is the better the view.  On rainy days the number of waterfalls and amount of water falling increase exponentially to the misery of the rain.  The huge scale of the scenery matches that in Alaska but the beauty surpasses anything I’ve seen before.
