We rented a car while staying in Italy and it was the best decision we made! The freedom to open the map and just drive lead to discoveries of quaint, medieval towns and beautiful vistas. And we could take our time because we were on our own schedule...it was great!
Pisa is stunning to see. Standing under the looming Leaning Tower is thrilling. And the Baptistry is equally beautiful. Don't forget to take your "holding-up-the-tower" photo! We didn't spend nearly enough time in Pisa. Having done research in the years after our trip, I now realize we took poor advice from someone who told us there wasn't much to see besides the Leaning Tower and Baptistry.
San Gimignano is one of my very favorite Tuscan towns. As you get closer to the town, you begin to see the unique multi-towered skyline in the distance. Definitely take some pictures from afar. The towers of San Gimignano are absolutely amazing. The history involves the tower's use as defense and intimidation between outsiders and even among the neighbors inside the town. Aside from the towers, there are many churches and piazzas. San Gimignano is know for it's beautiful painted pottery and white wine.
