Capital of Maldives
Being in the island day in and day out for a couple of weeks that turns into months and the counting continues, decided finally that I needed a different view. The only place familiar to me is Hulhule island (where the airport is located), this is my first impression of the Maldives and of course Male, the capital of Maldives. So, I started looking at local packages for a weekend getaway just to unwind, although being in this paradise there is nothing to complain about but the scene becomes too familar that you may start branding every minute with the same events around you. Anyway, so I have managed to get a deal with our sister resort (its the other resort that our company is managing) and I've asked Tracey and Alan to come along.
Tracey and Alan
the resort is located in North Male Atoll
- Hembhadu Island. There are no inhabitants as the resorts is the whole island itself. We left our tiny paradise around 4.30pm to reached Male before 5pm, where we will catch a speedboat that will take us to Hembhadu. The speedboat was bigger than our boats so we got excited about the difference that we are about to experience. When we jump into the boat we found a comfortable vacant seats with open space in the back side of the boat. We thought, ok its farther from the captain so, its more stable, we will not have a bumpy ride, feels like a king when we were seated.
where the water meets the sun
We were told the boat ride will take one hour, by hearing this we all got the stupidiest smile as we thought "oh this is gonna be a longer boat ride and it will be swift luxury - like sailing! when the engine started we realised our seats was a bad idea. Not only did the engine was behind us and smells like burned fuel but also the possibility of water splashing on our faces. Then we realised "aha - thats why everyone took the seats behind the captain!" But then, with high spirits we were enjoying the first couple of minutes after leaving Male. The fact that we are heading towards the opposite direction of what we are used to gives us some feeling of satisfaction. its like running away to a new paradise! The sun was going down as we head off, we took advantage taking a lot of pictures capturing one of the most beautiful sunset we ever saw (check the photo - water meets the sun).
when the sun shines
I took lots of photos what seems like rushing for the gold in minutes. when the sun was completely gone we started to get irritated with the boat ride, we started counting the minutes and asked how long to get there. then we started to feel dizzy with the smell of the engine and constant sound of it. As we get closer to the island the three of us became more quite, one I guess it was a long ride and we were competing with the sound of the engine so it felt like shouting all the time, so it was a mixture of reserving our energy for the surprise that awaits us and feeling a bit exhausted with the ride that seems like forever. when we arrived however, the team was already brief of our arrival, I guess because we are from the same company and they wanted to impress us.
We had 3 staff waiting at the jetty who even used our names wlecoming us with sincere smile. We were then lead to the lobby and we were handed a cold towel with a very strong lemon scent and served with a welcome drink. It taste good by the way, not only that it made us feel better after the longest boat ride in months! Then a guest service staff offered us a tour of the resort, it was already dark so everything that she showed us looks the same, the only thing that matter to us was where our room was located. then, she took us back to the reception. We booked for 2 rooms, unfortunately when we arrived they have given one of the room to somebody else, as of course our room was complimentary. We didnt made fuzz out of it, what more could you ask for if its free anyway.
Tracey and Alan were fine to share the room so then, we were lead to our room. They gave us a lagoon villa. It has two beds and a huge day bed next to the window, which looks ideal with the situation we are in. It has a sun deck with two sun beds and access to the lagoon if you want to swim just below your villa. Although, the villa look too old but the furnishing were great, the duvet is soft and towels looks new and smells good. We wondered for a while inside our villa after the guest service staff left, looking for something to comment on. hahaha typical of a hotelier! Anyway, Tracey and me took turns in the shower and then sat outside at the sun beds and discuss what we will do next, while Alan already found his way to the lagoon chasing crabs.
When all three of us were ready for dinner it was already 10pm, the main restaurant was almost closing. upon our arrival to the restaurant, we knew right away that they were anticipating our presence. We can tell from the look on their faces that they have been waiting for us. Dont know the motives exactly but we felt great knowing the staff was constantly looking after us. We had a very good impression, until the arrival of our food on the table. They had a buffet that evening, so we scout around the buffet display and pick the ones that looks yummy, but then, the chef surprised us with extra special cooking that we didnt have a choice but to try. I must say, we never regretted trying it.
the sunset that looks like a sunrise
But then, when we were seated and about to start out chit chat and all, came the rush of management team taking their turns introducing themselves to us, it feels like protocol and we felt bad about it. From time to time you have to put your fork and knife on the table to free your hand of the business card that goes with every person that comes and ask how the meal was. The dinner was not bad although with the interruptions that we got in between spoonfuls, we thought a drink at the bar would be ideal. So, from the restaurant its was just 20 meters away to the beach bar.
Tracey spotted a place on the flatform in an open area..not crowded..the seats were so comfy that I was tempted to close my eyes between sip.
where did the sun go?
There were other guest drinking and dancing with the music not far from us. Tracey begun to feel like dancing but we didnt move from the comfy seats, curling up under the stars meters away from the sea is a better option. While Alan was already everywhere exploring the whole island in darkness. We didnt realised the time until a waiter came to us to fetch our last order at 1am, so we got a handful of cuba libres and happy to be left alone as most others went back to their rooms. We sipped the drinks really slow and just enjoying the stars and the sound of the waves...By the time I finished my drink I decided to head of the room. I didnt see Alan after the restaurant so I thought he was already asleep, I was thinking that perhaps it was his way of outwitting both Tracey and me so he can take the best bed in the room.

When I came in the room there was no indication that anyone of us came back to the room since we left. Aware that I was all by myself I took shower and even thought which bed I'm going to have...When I was ready to hit the bed.. I received a call from a friend in Germany, while I was talking to him I thought maybe a walk on the sand would be great. So, I went out and started heading to the beach, then I saw Alan and Tracey seated drinking corona.. I was wondering how they got those beers when the bar was already closed???? Hmmmm... anyway, I was on the phone for half an hour and when I got off I couldnt see Tracey at all, although I spot Alan on the same place so I joined him.
The night was amazing, so quiet except for the sound of the waves rushing to shore, the stars were so beautiful we even saw a couple of shooting stars.
Welcome Drink - cool
We sat there for a while discussing how wonderful it would be to live in a deserted island, hahaha.. then we realised that we were bitten by mosquitos from time to time, in between yawns of course I realised its time to sleep. So we head back to the room. when we got in, we saw Tracey on the best bed, already sound asleep (Im not joking on this one!) really sound asleep! We looked at each other for a moment and then without asking each other we both grab a pillow and blanket and head off to the deck outside... we both have the same idea..I cant sleep when some snores..so we took each of the sun beds and continued talking. Its an open deck so we can see the stars above. It was the most beautiful sky I've ever seen.
lets wait for the sunset here
.I really forced myself to be awake as long as I can to capture that moment of watching that view, I attempted to take photos but unfortunately my camera is not designed for it. although, I dont have a photo but I have a great recollection of every shooting star I saw that evening. Didnt realise sleeping under the starry night is one of the best thing I did.
