It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas--Day One

Every fall my parents take a short trip to Disney World.  This November it worked out for me to join them for just over 48 hours.  Although I got sick nearly the minute I left for the airport for my return flight to Maryland, the trip was a needed break and a great reward for finishing my fall grad class.

Getting up at 5:30 on a Sunday (the day after a wedding may I add) is not high on my list of November activities but I was not about to take any chances on missing my flight.  An hour drive to the airport, easy walk through security, a casual breakfast, and then time waiting on the flight to be called.

The plane was full but the flight itself uneventful; I enjoyed my conversation with the woman next to me who is an engineering intern in Disney World.

Although the line for the Magical Express was long (I think the cruise ship was sailing today), my resort was the first stop on its route.  I checked in, picked up my room key, and turned around to see my parents.  It was so good to see them :)  After buying my park pass, we headed over to the room for me to drop off my bags, take a very short nap, and then head into Hollywood Studios (which I still call MGM).

Afternoon highlights included seeing the High School Musical 3 street show (my mom really wanted to see it), viewing the Toy Story Block Party (from afar but still a good show), dropping several times in the Tower of Terror, and careening through space in Star Tours.

We took the ferry from the Studios over to EPCOT as the sun was setting and entered the World Showcase just as darkness fell.  The nations thronged with people enjoying the last day of the International Food and Wine Festival.  My parents had checked the event out the day before and headed immediately for Canada's kiosk with its maple glazed salmon.   Salad from Greece complimented our first snack.  Dessert came after France; Mom and I had kiwi tartlets from either New Zealand or Australia.  I still felt full when we approached Germany so I just stole a few bites from my parents' apple strudel.  However, the mango mousse of India around the curve tempted me.  Mom enjoyed a pastry from Austria while Dad and I had chocolate churros from Spain.

We took a short break from the eating for a quick journey with Donald and his amigos through Mexico.  Then my parents settled in for Illuminations while I looked for a Christmas ornament gift (no luck) and grabbed a snack from Puerto Rico (a guava roll).

As usual the lights and fireworks of Illuminations were amazing (I have seen the show quite a few times now though).  We then hopped over to the Magic Kingdom for a special treat for me.

I have been to Disney World over a dozen times before but none at this time of the year.  A few years ago my parents saw the Christmas lights of the park for the first time, and now it was my turn.  When we came out from underneath the railroad station and I looked up at the castle, sparkling against the dark night sky, I was amazed.  Honestly, I just wanted to stare at it for a few minutes.  However, my dad was in the mood to visit Tomorrowland so I contented myself with glances as  I followed the parents.  We were able to ride Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin--not one of my better scores but still fun--along with the Tomorrowland Speedway (or whatever it's being called now).  More interesting to me though was the time when I was able to stand quietly and photograph the castle.  A very magical evening.

Fun! Congrats on your featured blog! The last time I was there was over New Years'. Disney World stayed open late and had fireworks at midnight. It was very cool! And also 14 years ago!
