Up Highway 190 From Kailua-Kona

   -cloud forest -- dead ends ~5,000’ with expansive views of Kona below, weather permitting; morning is best

   -good views down the coast -- leaving Kona

   -highway bisects several channels and tubes in lava

   -Hualalai Mountains to slopes of Mauna Loa

   -if clouds are absent you may see the top of Mauna Kea and its many dome-enclosed telescopes

   -Parker Ranch -- part of 175,000 acre cattle ranch

   -Holoholoku -- WWII copy of Mt. Suribachi

   -Waimea -- crossroads between east and west sides of island


Pololu Valley

   -end of road -- Pololu Valley Lookout

   -outstanding vista of Big Island

   -view is nicer halfway down trail

   -Pololu Beach below -- 15-20 minute trail through lush vegetation

   -Pololu Valley bountiful source of water-worn rocks to build temples, houses, etc.

   Best Treat (despite the name) -- Donkey Balls At Surfin’ Ass

   Best Sunset Cocktail Location -- Veranda at Keauhou Beach Resort

   Best Place For A Coffee and Cinnamon Roll In The Morning -- Island Lava Java

   Best Snorkeling -- Captain Cook Monument or Honaunau

   Best Place to Spot Dolphins -- Kealakekua Bay

   Best Dessert To-Go -- Mac Nut Pie, Highway 19 between mile markers 97 and 98

   Best Sunset Picnic -- BBQs at Honaunau or the tide pools of Wawaloi Beach, if the surf is crashing

   -southernmost spot of entire nation

   -Pass Kamoa Wind Farm on South Point Road


Green Sand Beach

   -mix of green and black sand

   -in Na‘alehu -- Hana Hou Bakery


Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach


Hawaii Volcano National Park

 Around Kilauea Crater

     -Sulfur Banks on right

        -hydrogen sulfide and steam make sulfur, gypsum and hematite on ground

      -Steam vents on left

        -amount of steam depends on rainfall within the last few days

        -take trail 2-3 minutes -- view of crater and more powerful vents


 Kilauea Overlook

   -view of Kilauea Crater and Halema‘uma‘u Crater


 Jagger Museum and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory


 Halema‘uma‘u Crater -- crater within a crater -- home of Pele



   -has abnormally hard rock

   -just past this crater -- notice gravel-like substance -- tephra -- airborne gas-frothed lava from fountains, cooling as pumice cinders


 Chain of Craters Road


 Pu‘u Pua‘i Overlook

   -overlooks Kilauea Iki Crater and Pu‘u Pua‘i

   -Kilauea offers one of the best hikes on the island


 Thurston Lava Tube

     -more adventurous explore darker half -- ~1,000’ and ends abruptly

     -turn off lights at end to see real blackness


Kilauea Iki Outlook

   -look at Kilauea from the other side

   -separated from Kilaeua by narrow land bridge -- Byron Ledge





Rainbow Falls

   -moderate flow is best

   -best seen in morning with sun behind you

   -end of Highway 132 on 1960 lava flows -- 3/10 high -- harshest, most difficult to like (easier time through Korean DMZ minefield)

   -Champange Pond -- crystal clear water heated by volcano

   -lightly used during the week


Kaimu Beach

   -black sand beach

   -can see Pu‘u ‘O‘o


North on Highway 19

   -4 mile scenic route





Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden

   -2,000+ exotic flora


Akaka Falls


   -best seen in late morning


Umauma Falls

   -can only be seen by visiting World Botanical Gardens

   -closed Sunday
