on the bus!
So I have never been that into cruises. When my mom turned 50 last December, she wanted everyone to go on a cruise, so we did...to the Caribbean, and it was actually a lot of fun. So when I was planning a trip to Greece, I decided to look into cruises. Normally I would just find a place to stay and explore on my own. But I wanted to be able to cover a lot of ground on this trip, which is easy to do if you are dropped of at a new port every morning. Plus, this one stopped in Turkey and Egypt, two places I wasn't planning on visiting anytime soon, but the more the merrier :) After convincing my friend Amanda to go with me, we booked our trip!

First was Istanbul. I wasn't really excited about seeing Turkey, it was just kind of an extra stop or two on the way to Greece.

But my goodness it was incredible! We spent a day in Istanbul and another in Ephesus. I have seen ruins before. But nothing that compares to Ephesus! Turkey is definitely a place that deserves more time than we spent there, I will have to go back :)

Next was Greece. We saw Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, Corfu, Crete and Olympia. Greece is a beautiful country and each island had its own charms. I have to say that my favorite was Santorini. It is just so essentially Greece! Gorgeous and so unique. Although Corfu was fun too, we just wandered around the streets and found fun little shops and cafes.

Egypt was a place that I was really excited about, somewhere I probably wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for this cruise. It was quite a drive to Cairo (about 3 hours) and it was very hot there! The pyramids are just hard to put into words.
Hagia Sophia, Istanbul
Not at all what you expect, but amazing nonetheless! It was hard to be excited while we were there, as it was quite chaotic and hotttt! But when we got home and looked at pictures and tried to explain the hugeness of the stones that were used to build these things and the way everything looked, I was kind of in awe of it all! We spent the next day in Alexandria which was a lot of fun. My favorite thing there was the catacombs. Unfortunately, no photos were allowed so I can't share that with anyone, but I have the memories! It was huge and creepy and incredible!

Athens was our last stop. By the time we got there we were pretty worn out! We got to our hotel, then headed to see the sights. After figuring out where the Acropolis was and how to get there (a little hike!) we finally saw the Parthenon in all its scaffolded glory...I guess those places require a little bit of upkeep or something... :)

After seeing everything we could, we headed back home...28 hours later I landed in Portland. Every time I travel I am reminded how much I hate flying. Anyway, Greece is beautiful, Turkey is amazing and Egypt is awe-inspiring!
