Colonia del Sacramento in the small South-American República Oriental del Uruguay is the oldest town in the entire country. The city was founded in the 1600s by the Portuguese and has changed hands between them and the Spanish a few times. The architecture is a reminder of this era and has been preserved quite well. Due to its small size, a day (or maximum 2) is more than enough to check things out. Colonia del Sacramento is also just an hour away by boat from Buenos Aires in Argentina!
