in search of red sandstone

As part of my goal to see all 50 states, I decided to head south for Spring Break so I could check off Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. Most of my stops were geology related :)

in search of red sandstone

Ha ha, another rock stop for today.  Now we are looking for some cross bedded red sandstone in Red Rock Canyon State Park.  We drove in and took a little hike through some tall snakegrass and soon found ourselves next to the red canyon wall.  Somehow we also found ourselves on top of the red canyon wall.  I can't remember if there was a trail or we just climbed up on our own.  This park has some camping, swimming, and rock climbing.  We just did our own climbing.  But we were excited to see the source of the Jurassic red beds (red soil) we've been seeing along the road side.  At least I think that was what we were seeing.    And yeah, I'm pretty sure we just climbed up on our own.  So after another quick photo stop, we were off.

Just outside of the park we saw an excaped inmate!
