Mauritius - the Hub of my holiday
October 3, 2008
After being in the developing world, mauritius was a sight for sore eyes and the beginning of a new phase of my trip.
I came and went via mauritius as a hub for travelling elsewhere, my first passage out of mauritius I organised on my first day in port louis, I pre-booked all my flights in the area without booking any accomodation.
I would travel first to reunion then onward to the seychelles, come back to mauritius and then fly out to rodriguez (island) for a few days and back again before coming home.
I decide to go to reunion via boat simply because it was available and although it wasnt that straight forward to organise it was was done in the few days I was in mauritius - port louis.
The port itself is a capital like anywhere else, with good and bad points: useful conveniences, schmaltzy tourism , good eating and a dark and shady side.
The botanic gardens at pampelmousses is definitely worth the trip north for, give yourself a whole day to see that and the sugar museum.
I left the museum till last that day though and didnt give myself enough time to see it all before it shut for the day, give yourself a couple of hours to see it properly and it's more than the history of sugar, it's the history of mauritius , with many parallels to what the other islands went through in their turbulent past.
I gave myself a week in mauritius till the 10th where i'd take the ferry to reunion.
Next entry will be on the 6th October to flic-en-flac to get a taste of the mauritius that the brochure's promise.
