Stadtwald - Frankfurt City Forest
February 20, 2007
Where New York has Central Park and London has Hype Park and a few others, Frankfurt just simply has a natural forest. It is to the south of the city and pretty much merges into it and also reaches a few outer towns. It is a very popular place for a relaxed Sunday walk, to go with dogs, cycle around or have a barbeque (in the little purpose-built BBQ huts of course, it's Germany after all and rules are rules :P ). In winter I have even seen people cross-country skiing in the forest. Close to the southern districts of Frankfurt is a lake that people seem drawn to, although it's not exactly big or made for swimming. Generally, it's a nice place to go and switch off if you just want to sit on a bench and watch the world go by. Or there are a few spots to be more active.
For Frankfurt the "Stadtwald" is an important part of the city, balancing the business nature of Frankfurt a bit. There's even a specific holiday! It's called "Wäldchestag" (Forest Day) and people get the day or half the day off to go to the forest, have fun at the fair and relax.
(Some of the photos were shot by my dad who often takes a walk in the forest first thing in the morning)
