Our airplane after arriving in Quito.

Welcome to our blog, courtesy of Garrett!!

We arrived safely in Quito.  The van ride from the airport to our hotel was uneventful.  The streets around here are very narrow and crowded.  Along the way we passed a lot of very old churches and buildings.  They started building one of them in 1534!  We´re on our way to check it out now.  It´s called Monastery San Francisco.  We´re also going to try to find an ice cream shop that´s been open since the 1850s.

We´ll write soon!

7:30pm

Well, we found the church and went inside.  There are some pretty interesting things there.  One of the Bibles on display was from 1339!  There are also a lot of amazing old paintings and sculptures from the 16th and 17th centuries.  The coolest thing though was the "confession corners".  Instead of a confessional, the church has a specially built corner in an arcade in a courtyard (an arcade is a covered outdoor walkway).  One person stands facing the inside corner of the building; the other stands facing the courtyard with a pillar right in front of them.  Then they talk.  The accoustics are such that both people can hear the other perfectly while facing away from each other from a distance of about 12 ft.  I thought it was cool.

¡Hasta mañana!
