Spent a few days in Big Bend National Park with my niece before heading back to San Antonio
for the dental convention. Big Bend is a huge park in southwest Texas. The Chisos Mountains are located in the park and provide a great backdrop for a variety of hiking options. Our day hike led us to "the window". Due to the recent presence of black bears and their cubs, this trail was closed until very recently. A great 4 hour hike in the middle of the Chiso Mountains. The next 2 days we hooked up with an outfit called "Far Flung Outdoor Center". ATV riding was 1st on the agenda, through Big Bend State Park. Riding through a surprisingly green desert, our guide was very informative regarding the local wildlife, fauna and history of the area. During one hike away from the ATV's my niece came withing inches of stepping on a diamondback rattlesnake. Amazed it didn't strike, she leaped out of her intended path and avoided a serious encounter. The 3rd day was the best, rafting down the Rio Grande River. Due to the amount of rainfall the area had recently, the river was moving faster than usual (still a very peaceful ride). Rafting between the 2 countries for 6 hours made for a great day. The towering canyon walls were incredibly scenic.
