the north sea in wassenaar (near the hague)
November 9, 2005
i am a big fan of deserted beaches, coasts in winter and autumn, although i am person who likes to goof-around - i enjoyed the melancholic moods and feelings. me and my friend rented a bungalow in wassenaar, netherlands. for only 200+ euros a week in november! with a small kitchen, cable tv and 2 rooms. and it is only 1 - 2 kms away from the sea and 12 kms from the hague. i love the area here in the netherlands because they didnt put breaks in the sea, which means, the waves can go high and mightily as they should.
i asked a friend of mine in düsseldorf, works as a teacher in the university - why is the north sea - the powerful of all seas? he answered: it is a myth and a bit dramatic, the waves were the cries of despair of the people who suicided and drown themselves into the sea because of love.
what a perfect description of the mood there. it was really surreal.. given the fact that it was so cold at the coast and powerful winds, almost prevented me from taking pictures.
wassenaar is a small town near to it. a nobles town, when i was there, in the small church was the christening of queen beatrix's grandchild.
the town is a perfect way of relaxation away from work and stress - small crowds, the sea, quiet pubs and biking galore - for netherlands is so flat that biking is like a walk in the park.
i enjoyed my week there, it was truly a different thing that i am used to - tropical beaches - coconuts - sunshine against - barren sands, horizons of nothing, dark clouds, coldness and only one voice is talking - the sound of the mighty sea.
