the city between the glorious alps.
as a child, i am always fascinated with mountains: snow capped, barren and forested. before christmas, i have a vacation for a month and me and my friend decided to travel in the alps for a week in austria. it was like a dream come true for me, what would be better to see snow capped mountains than the alps and in early winter?! couldnt be better. so we decided to book a hostel - not bad - for 25+ euros a night incl. early breakfast.
we started at about 12:00 in the afternoon because the hostel was expecting us at about 19:00-20:00. we were caught overspeeding at the province of rheinland pfalz in germany. hahahaha - my friend used to drive lamborghinis and when he drives his car - thank god that its not a sportscar and eventhough its not, he's still driving like crazy - 200 kmh an hour hehehehe :D - overall, it should be 8+ hours driving but we got there less than 8 hehehe, including stopovers in bavaria hehehe.
innsbruck is the largest city in the tirol/tyrol region in the alps. it lies 500 meters. and it is between the bettelwurf, nordkette and karwendel mountain chains which are over 2,000 meters high and at that time was already snowcapped. for a city of a little over 100,000 innsbruck is very charming. a river divides the city called the inn. and the otherside is the altstadt (old town) where the symbol of innsbruck is - the goldene dachl (golden roof). the maria-theresien-straße where you have a magnificent view of the said mountain ranges - it is basically the postcard image of innsbruck. it has not much difference to german cities but austrian german is hard to comprehend - they had their own dialect (i learned high german) and they speak also high german but with an accent.
it is also the starting point of mountaineers, skiiers and trekkers in the alps in austria - because in the vicinity are the stubaier and ötztal alps - where ötzi - the ice man was found.
it has many local attractions - like the fiaker - or horse drawn carriages which can drive you throughout the inner city and the old city while in awe of the mountains that surrounds innsbruck, berg isl - where 2x the winter olympics was held and you have a FASCINATING and PRICELESS view of the city (i think the entrance is 10 euros per person but it is really worth it), then the old street trains - very charming :), the alpenzoo - a collection of animals that can only be found in the alpine region of europe.

a bit pricey, costs about 15 euros a person. but it is worth at the top because it also has a restaurant with a view and you can feel you are the eye of innsbruck.
