The Sydney Opera House

I arrived in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon and it was raining when I landed.  Maybe I should have stayed in Byron Bay!  The weather had picked up a bit when I woke up the next morning and so I headed out to do a bit of sightseeing.  I wandered along to the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and around the Darling Harbour area.  The bridge and opera house are pretty impressive so I took a few snaps before meeting up with my friend Beatrice (otherwise known as B) for a bite to eat and a few drinks.  I've been to Sydney before so know a couple of bars that are quite good.  In the first bar we went to we bumped into Meg Ryan!  Yes, that's right, the film star!  In case you don't know her she was in some pretty huge films in the late 80's and early 90's including When Harry Met Sally, Top Gun and Sleepless in Seattle.

Bondi Beach!
Didn't get an autograph though unfortunately as she wasn't around for more than a few minutes.

As it was my birthday yesterday I decided to start celebrating early and met up with a few friends on both Friday and Saturday.  Sunday was Bondi beach day and I wandered down there and met up with a mate of mine on the beach.  It was a pretty windy day so there were some pretty good waves coming in with all the surfers desperately trying to ride a good one.  Bondi beach always looks very large in the pictures, but in actual fact it's not as big in real life.  Apparantly one of the old characters from Home & Away (Sam) is a lifeguard on the beach now, but I didn't manage to see him as no-one was drowning in the sea at the time - which was rather lucky!

Today I took a trip to another of Sydney's beaches - Manly.

It's on the northern shores of the harbour area and is a beautiful location.  I met another friend of mine (yes I know I have a lot of friends!) called Shelley and we got fish and chips (pronounced 'fush and chups' if you're from New Zealand).  This beach is also very popular with surfers as it's pretty safe, but gets some very good waves.  On the ferry on the way over to Manly I watched the returning ferry heading back to the city.  It was ploughing deep into the water and waves covered the whole deck.  It was a lovley day so I'd hate to be on that thing when it's very windy and wet - I bet they get a lot of people being sea sick!

Tomorrow I plan to climb Sydney Harbour Bridge.  I was hoping to do it on Friday, but didn't fancy doing it in the pouring rain, although they do run the climb in all weather conditions....except an electrical storm which I guess is a little bit dangerous being that far up in the air!
