inside the train from austria to hungary, cold very cold.
"hungarians are a curious breed. despite sitting at the very heart of europe, they speak a language unlike that of any of the countries immediately around them. some have suggested that hungarians are descendants from a race of aliens who landed here and chose this spot to settle. others have argued ancestral links with attila the hun, hence the country's name."

from the guide magazine, "hungary step by step" (which is given to me by a friend of a friend as soon as i arrived n budapest)

taking a quick nap in the train, i was startled by my phone, well, i dont have any ringtone, but it was always on vibration mode. i am annoyed by ringtones eversince so i always put it on vibe.

i got an sms and said that i am now using tmobile hungary. that got me excited and now, i can't sleep because a wave of excitement flushed all over me.
inside the train and driving through hungary in a cold and rainy winter day.

hungary, budapest to be specific is one of my dream destinations in the world and dream it is not as i am on my way. although i have very little introduction to the country and city because for a long time it was shut but communism and my country,  the philippines have so many influences from america and before it was the cold war and it wasnt introduced to us in textbooks, so there are no connections between hungary and me, thats why as i child i was obsessed with it.

the only recollections i have of the country, was that my mother was telling me stories that she was working for a hungarian-guatemalan/american expat and how her boss as a child fled with her family before communism erected the iron gate.

then when i was in düsseldorf, i got to know a hungarian, katarina, who told me fascinating stories about her childhood in budapest. like when the communists erected those big block houses, which are all the same, she got lost finding her home, because she could not distinguised her home from the other houses in the neighborhood because they are all the same! and also they have to wear the same dress like any other children in her time did! fascinating and scary at the same time! which, made me more and more obsessed with the country, it like a dessert in front of my eyes! but eventhough i am living in europe for almost 5 years, i couldnt go to hungary as i need a visa, it was always the case of "so near but yet so far".

then when hungary became schengen in the beginning of 2008, i know my time and chance will came, but in 2008, i already have a lot of advanced travel plans and sadly, hungary was out of the question.

but now, this is it, i would not pass the opportunity to visit hungary, to visit magyarország, the country of the magyars.

in the time of the austria-hungary empire, the empress elisabeth was not only the empress of the second largest country in europe, but also the queen of hungary. the empress elisabeth loves hungary and budapest so much. the she even learned to speak the hungarian language fluently which was for me impossible to learn as it is difficult from the indo european languages because it belongs to to the finno ugric languages and she was surrounded by hungarian consorts in her reign which she adores so much.

but now, i am inside her. hungary, a strange language, a strange lande, an obscure history, shut down from the western world for so many years, curious people, a city in the danube and a part of a short lived empire. i dont know what to expect, but i know it will be an adventure. i can feel it in my bones.

finally it would no more be obscure.
