View from the 'New Cathedral'
Sienna was breathtaking! One of my favorite, if not my very favorite, Tuscan hill towns. It has a beautiful landscape and is an amazingly fun town. They have 13 districts, each with their own crests and flags and people are very attached to them. They even have horse races, which are a HUGE deal too. They have a beautiful cathedral, and a 'new cathedral' which barely got built. It was beautiful and ornate on the outside and in. There was really detailed work on the ceiling especially. This was one of my favorite cathedrals, if not my favorite. They even have these old Goric Chant books with gold leafing and wonderful artistry called the Torre del Mangia. The town square is where the races are and they had some great stores in there too. I didn't spend nearly as much time there as I wish I could have, but it was time to be off to see San Gimignano
. That town was beautiful as well, they had a lot of towers, much like Sienna because in Medieval times that was used for protection. I didn't climb in San Gimignano like I did in Sienna, but we found some great gelato and some Terra Cotta pieces in the stores, as well as a 5L bottle of Chianti, which turned out to be VERY good. It was misty and a little rainy as we were in SG.
