Oamaru

Sadly leaving Mount Cook area today, for Oamaru. Not too sure where to go next, got ten days left in N.Z before I need to be back in Auckland, for the Melbourne flight.

Mountain air sure does make you sleep well.

I stayed at the Criterion Hotel - recommended. I tried to get to see the penguins coming in for the night, but missed them by half an hour. The Penguin Colony is about ten minutes' walk away from the hotel.

Very friendly
Very friendly welcome, as soon as I walked through the door into the bar. Sometimes entering a bar feels like an old cowboy movie, where the music stops and everybody stares as you enter. However – not here! Got myself a really nice room, where you needed binoculars to see the ceiling (the light switch pull must have been 3m in length). The hotel is done out in Victorian style, quite tastefully. Once the room was sorted I had a couple of beers and a nice meal (beef hot pot is good). If you replaced the Kiwi accent with a Scottish one, then you could be in the Scottish Highlands somewhere.

The Penguin Colony is about ten minutes' walk away up the road.

My single room (more like a double), drinks, meal and inclusive breakfast came to $100, which I was really happy about. The owner even sat down with me at breakfast for a chat, and shook my hand on leaving.
