delft, netherlands
November 13, 2005
i've heard and seen delft through films, pictures, paintings and where the exquisite ceramic potteries are made. i've seen it in nosferatu (klaus kinski remake) where the vampyr was running in the evening across the plaza and the girl with the pearl earring and i decided to visit this place and i dont know as usual what to expect from it.
that was sunday and there was a celebration like the carneval and lots of people are just enjoying the city - apart from the locals, also some tourists from all over the world. as soon as i get into the old city - a huge plaza is in it. between the nieuwe kerk (new church) where the dutch royals were buried and the city hall. there are lots of corners to discover there - art galleries, small cafe's, dark alleys, curiosity and souvenir shops. it is dissected by a canal that weaves through the city. i feel like time turned when i was here, eventhough it is already the moden time, it still has a centuries old feel inside the city - walled gates, old houses preserved, the slow boats winding through the canal and the aura of the old city itself .
i had fun walking through the city eating hot waffle and watching the parade and taking photos (well i edited them, they are not orginal anymore :D) it is a very small city (around 100,000) but it has lots of things to offer - culturally and historically.
