Annual Halloween Costume Contest - San Pedro Holiday Hotel
Costume party time! Fortunately, I was wearing a wig so it wouldn’t take me that long to get ready. I was going as the German Beer Wench aka Oktoberfest girl and Silvina was going as the Mile High Captain. Whoo Hoo. We were very excited to check this party out and had heard there is even a red carpet you have to walk down! LOL. I wanted to come up with a very creative costume idea in hopes of winning but just ran out of time trying to finish work so I could go on vacation in the first place. They give like $1000 US as the grand prize I believe so there is quite an incentive!
We managed to get ready in record time (3 hours…LOL) and it was time for our cab already! Getting in and out of the taxi was quite the laugh given the length of my costume.
I literally dove in to the cab as we left the hotel and tried to scoot my way out when we arrived. The streets were packed and lined with people who were watching all the costumed arrivals. Thank heaven they dropped us off down the way so we were not in the middle of all the people, giving them a show!!! It was only 10pm and the place was pretty much packed. We walked the red carpet and felt like movie stars as camera flashes were everywhere and little kids tried to reach out and touch us.
I had heard some of the costumes were elaborate but WOW….some of these people really go all out. One of the first costumes I spot is the cereal killer couple. Yes, they both have cereal boxes all over their bodies with knives stuck through them - how cute! Then I saw my favorite - the bride and the headless husband. Their costumes were awesome although I felt bad for the guy who had to keep his head in his shirt all night. One of the funnier ones was a guy who was "dressed" as Coconut Leo...he's a local known as coconut man who climbs the trees for coconuts and does some wild tricks! I actually have photos of him climbing trees at Mata Rocks from last year's trip! LOL
Next we saw a scary duo - apparently from the movie Saw (never seen it). These guys were scary and the one carried a chain that connected him to the other scary dude on the tricycle. As we were taking photos and milling around, I spotted my heartthrob! Someone dressed as Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. OMG!! Sorry, had to go for the Disney reference! I had to get a picture with him for sure!! :D He ended up being very nice and after talking with him for awhile, learned he just moved to Belize from Canada to start a watersports business.
We milled around some more as the place became more and more packed, making it impossible to move anywhere. Not to mention it was hot and humid so we were miserable in our costumes. There was one guy who was basically a dead fisherman who reaked of dead fish every time he walked by. Not a pleasant smell in that cramped and humid environment. We saw some other great costumes including a big bad wolf that had body parts hanging from his mouth - NICE! We ran into my friend and bartender at the restort (Sherlyn) and was surprised she recognized me in the wig but she did.
A few more pictures and a little dancing and we were getting tired. Someone came over and started talking to us and turns out, it was a fellow dive instructor and friend of Bundy, the guy who just got married next door to our resort. Russell is also a friend of the other dive instructor our fellow TB member, Wendy (Travelngirl) knows! We danced a little more and decided we couldn't handle waiting any longer for them to announce the winners. It was after 2am and our feet were dying! Wish I had brought flip flops to wear! Uuuugh. Finally they started announcing the winners but we couldn't even hear where we were standing so we said forget it and decided to bail!
The streets were dead, the red carpet was removed, and we managed to hail a cab and headed back to our hotel, thoroughly exhausted! It was definitely a fun time and I look forward to the party next year and hopefully a great costume idea since I have a year to plan!!!
