Visit to the old mill

In a small corner of the USA there is a small place which is actually full of history. The fight for freedom is nowhere closer than the area around Virginia. Where the struggles from the old day American revolutionaries and later the Civil War. In this area there is an old historic place which is just as old as most you will find in Europe. And in a corner of the state are some of the best nature sights east of the Rockies. “But as for me, give me LIBERTY or give me DEATH!” Patrick Henry

Visit to the old mill

Mabry Mill

The day is pretty much coming to a close and I have more or less decided not to make any more stops today. But then all of a sudden plans do change. Just right next to the road on my right is this beautiful little water mill and I just got to stop for like two seconds to take a photo.

Well the watermill is part of a general exhibition of how the people lived in this area 100 years ago - and sure enough it is free - ok I don't really want to spend time here but I go in and have a look anyways.

Around the mill is some old building with a bit of a display of life in the old days and how the owner of the mill had problem securing enough water for his mill because the two creeks on his land just did not contain very much water. There is also a small display of how the people in this area used to be self sufficient on different area including some the tax man did not really like them to be self sufficient on - like distilling whisky. But in the Appalachian this was common practice from old time and the tradition was also kept alive during the crazy prohibition period in the 1920s.

After the visit to the mill I return to the road and it is getting a bit dark now. The darkness is a scary - because it will bring out the wildlife of the area. And oh my oh my the wildlife is coming out now. A bit down the road I spot a few dears.

I really don't like seeing the dears now - because dears are crazy animals. They might just decide jumping right out in front of your car while you are driving down the road - and they generally don't seem to understand the traffic rules. Like I am in a car - hence I got the right of way.

Living in the city I don't understand how wildlife is behaving - except pigeons - and they are generally just annoying. By some sort of miracle I manage to drive the rest of the way without any dears trying to commit suicide using my car and I get to the final destination of the day and get a place to sleep and somewhere to eat.
