Old town Williamsburg

Williamsburg Travel Blog › entry 4 of 25 › view trip summary

In a small corner of the USA there is a small place which is actually full of history. The fight for freedom is nowhere closer than the area around Virginia. Where the struggles from the old day American revolutionaries and later the Civil War. In this area there is an old historic place which is just as old as most you will find in Europe. And in a corner of the state are some of the best nature sights east of the Rockies. “But as for me, give me LIBERTY or give me DEATH!” Patrick Henry

Williamsburg is one of the oldest cities anywhere in USA. Only a few places got a longer history in the old Spanish parts of USA. Much of the old town have been restored so you can walk around and see the old houses. It is free to walk around town but you need to pay if you want to go into the houses. This day I was not really interested in going in to the houses so I went cheap and only walked into the town for free. The whole town is set up as it would look just before the battle at Yorktown where Washington forced Cornwallis to surrender the British army.

All over the town you will see men and women dress in clothing from the period of around 1770s. There is also a lot of people dress like the soldier getting ready for the coming battle just outside the town.  Around the town you can also see people working at different old trades like they would have done during the period.

For me all this seems a bit like a circus but the city is really nice and gives a good impression of the old style of the houses in the area. You can see the forerunners for present day southern building styles.

It used to be the most important city in all of Virginia and the home of the governor of Virginia. Hence there is an old governor’s mansion from the time of the British.

As I walk out the area along the old windmill I had seen on the way in I just think about how great it was to get here early because people is coming all the time and the city is getting ever more crowded. Luckily it was a Sunday hence a lot of people had to go to church before they went sightseeing.
