No it is not snow - it is cotton

I am heading to Charleston today - but I am not really ready to be driving all day and then get to Charleston just before sunset - hence I need to find something to do during the day. On the start of the days driving I am heading through an area with lots and lots of cotton fields one of the products which is so famous for this part of the country - hence I need a few close up photos of these plants and go somewhere to park just of the road to go and explore the cotton. And sure it is pretty soft even on the plant - kind of what you would expect but I was not sure if they did something in the processing to change the appearance of the cotton. This stop was just too short to kill more than a few minutes - hence I need something else and I kept searching for another place to go.

I found a tiny town in North Carolina which sound like a place you could go for a few hours to see the old town.

Home of Pepsi
The small city of New Bern - the city was named by the first people to settle the town. They came from Switzerland and named the city after the current day capital of the country. The city is not really on the main tourist map hence there are not a lot of people strolling on the streets this Monday morning.

The city is fairly small and the only really big structure is the Tryon Palace where you can get a tour of the house if you want on the hour - but it is just past the hour and I don’t feel like hanging around for an hour so I just go out and have a look around the city. Apparently the city has just had its big flower festival a few days before and there is still a bit of extra azaleas some places in the town.

The old city is pretty small and easy to navigate and you can just walk around and look at the pretty old building from the heyday of the town when it must have been somewhat more important than the sleepy appearance of present day New Bern.

The town hall - again
On some of the houses there is a big black bear - the city marker taken from the home country by the first settlers.

One other piece of fame in the city is soft drinks. This is the home of the first Pepsi Cola. You would imagine that the home of Pepsi would have a huge building with a giant museum and lots of stuff to see - like a full Pepsi experience. But no no - this is New Bern and not a place for that sort of thing. Hence the small shop where the first Pepsi were made is only a tiny souvenir shop for Pepsi products today and not really a museum.

I walk to the town hall and here on the walls - high above the street - the black bear reign again. It is time to head back to the car just at the castle and once again the tour has just left. I am not that interested in the castle hence I get going at once.
