Driving on the edge

Bear den look - overlook

I head out of Asheville to go up in the mountains on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The road is originally built as a depression area work project but the construction of the road did open up this area to the rest of the world. Today the road is more or less following the ridge of the Appalachian Mountains all the way from Great Smokey Mountains to Shenandoah National Park and it is mainly used by people who are touring the Appalachians because there are others and better roads to handle the daily traffic.

Just after heading out of Asheville I get on the road and I am ready to explore. My explorations do not go on very long though. Because just a few miles out of Asheville I am met by a giant detour sign telling me to go to the interstate and bypass a large section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Ah well I just need this 30 miles detour on the interstate it is always the real way to go through the states anyway - just cruising down the interstate with for hours and hours.

I finally get to the end of the detour and go up on the road to go see it.

The road is winding away along the ridge and there are many different viewpoints along the road. Hence my first idea about just driving is not really working all that well for me. Because like every 3-4 miles I just need to stop the car at a viewpoint and take a picture of the fall colours along the road. The area is not really clear - but that is usual in this area. The road got it name from the colours of the air in this area. Because of the forest there is usually a bluish colour in the sky giving the mountains the name the Blue Ridge Mountains. But no matter what the fall colours are just as spectacular as yesterday in Great Smokey Mountains.

After stopping at several of the viewpoints I want to go to one of the main sights along the road - the Linville Falls. Ok I am ready to admit it - I got a thing for waterfalls and if there is one on the map of the road I am going I am very likely to make a detour and go see it. So of course I will go see this one too. And there are a couple of places to look at the waterfall - but honestly this is not the best waterfall in the world. It is not even up anywhere close to the top of any of my mental list of the best waterfalls in the world.

But the setting in the middle of the forest with all the fall colours make it a nice short walk in the woods to go see the waterfall.

Heading down the road is pretty slow going - the road is winding a bit at to that the fact there is a general speed limit of 35-45 miles per hour on the road and my constant stopping at the different viewpoints mean I am not doing anywhere near my expected progress on the day trip. I actually just wanted to drive through this part of the world so I could get up to the northern part of Virginia today. It is not looking like it is gonna happen but I am enjoying the sights of the trees along the way.
