Rozendaal is very small, it has his own town hall thats very unusal. Mostly it has too be a big town, but this place is really an exeption. The people love to live there, because they are not depending on the descisions the big cities around them make. So they can devellop their own plans, and activities. Most of the people living in Rozendaal are "rich" they say!! And yes there a few big houses.
This castle is from the late 15th century and was build by the "Heren van Gelre". A lot of famous families has lived here. Like Dirck van Dorth, Adolf Torck, and the last Baron Willem Frederick Torck baron Van Pallandt. After the war he gave this to the "Geldersch Landschap" and "Vrienden der Kastelen" (friends of the castles).
The famous shell galery was damaged in the war, but they restored it. It is realy nice to take a walk along the gallery and listen to the gide's story. They call it "de Bedriegertjes" (the cheaters) The town hall used to be an hostelry in 1718. And in those days it was named Rosenaeth. The name is still hanging on the wall of the town hall. In this area there used to be a lot of watermills, because we had so many litte creeks. The Rosendaelse beek,(this creek was the reason that people came to live in this area) it is a creation from the lateral moraine at the Veluwe. In early days there where 7 watermills and 6 papermills and a cornmill working thanks to the Rosendaelse beek. This was the beginning of the existence of Arnhem. Karel van Gelre decided in 1715 that the Rijn should be replaced, because this was better for the trade.
