Beaching it at San Juan del Sur

Well finding a taxi to take us to San Juan del Sur was not much of an issue as we were attacked by drivers as we disembarked from the ferry.  Cindy picked one of the guys (not sure what her criteria were but he was relatively young and spoke a bit of English) and bargained for a ride.  The four of us piled in his total piece of crap car as dusk turned into evening and headed off for the 45 minute drive to San Juan.

As we left San Jorge and headed out on to a barely lit two lane road, I noticed that neither my door on the rear passenger side nor Cathy’s on the rear driver’s side had a door handle or a window crank (no power windows in this old dog…)  Momentary paranoia set in with visions of being kidnapped and dragged out into the cane fields set in.

Apparently I was not alone in this though as Cathy later told me that she noticed the same lack of knobs and was ready to pounce on the driver and garrote him if he tried anything (she had previously told us that Robb would flee in a second rather than fight so we would have to fend for ourselves).  Meanwhile, Robb tried to keep the driver engaged in a conversation which is not an easy feat when neither of you speaks more than twenty words of the other’s language.

Well any worrying was all for naught as some road lights in front of us came into view and we turned left into a property with a big Villas de Palermo in front.  The driver took us up to the main office, happily took his money and left without further incident.  Since we hadn’t ever got an email or call back from the Villas, we were mildly concerned that we wouldn’t be able to check in early but it ended up that virtually no-one was staying there so an early check-in was not a problem.

Carlos the office guy sent someone to check and make sure our villa was ready and suggested we step into the restaurant for a drink or a snack.

We were greeted there by an American couple who were one of the original owners in the complex and have since moved to San Juan and built a custom home on the cliffs overlooking the ocean.  Apparently the previous management team at Villas de Palermo were less than stellar and so they have stepped in to temporarily manage the place. The property is a fairly large complex with a hillside of identical, two bedroom condos with a view of the harbor in the distance as well as many custom lots.  The wife offered us a drink so we all had Tona beers and chatted with her and her husband for a bit before checking in to our condo.

It ended up being a really nice two-story place with a full kitchen and a nice patio with a view of the ocean in the distance.

We settled in a bit and then headed back to the restaurant for dinner which was pretty good but a bit limited and certainly had no locale flair.  They did have a pretty good steak with blue cheese in a wine reduction which of course always goes well with Tona’s…

Election mania is of course in full swing as tonight is the big night.  We watched CNN for a bit but once it became obvious that Obama was going to win, everyone else went to bed.  I stayed up editing photos and listened to his acceptance speech before heading off to slumber land.  Looks like there’s a new sheriff in town…wonder how that will go???
