Wow, rather different from Roosevelt's riches. Vanderbilt was nouvelle rich. Roosevelt family was generation rich. Vanderbilt's displayed and showed off their riches unlike the Roosevelt's who did not. But the Roosevelt's made it thru the depression of 1920's and onward and continue to flourish today long after the Vanderbilt's are not heard of quite as much. However they both have land all over the world!!!
The land we toured was magnificent, probably because the fall foilage was quite breathtaking especially this time of the year. The gift shop offered a few gifts that caught my eye. I bought a beautiful windbreaker jacket for David and of course every tourist spot I go to I get a 'hat pin' which I put in my Jeep sun visor. I have been collecting 'hat pin's since 1988 and my jeep visor is full of them. A couple have broken off due to them being cheaply made , but most of them are still firmly pinned in my sun visors.
We were not allowed to take photos inside the Vanderbilt mansion nor inside the Roosevelt mansion, so telling the stories is mostly from memory of what I saw.
