Just inside the front gate.
Since our first meet up earlier this year, Andrea (missandrea81), Lena (bwitch16) and I all wanted to get together again and spend the day at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. We finally picked a date and I sent Andrea some information on the festival and how to get here. Lena and I go to the festival a few times a year, so we were ready to show Andrea and her husband Alex the town. Since Alex and Andrea are not early risers, and they are driving from Alexandria, Va., they said they would call when they were on their way and we would meet just inside the gate when they arrived later in the afternoon.
and I arrived at the festival about 10:00 am, when the gates first opened.
Jenny (jelie3110) with Miles Tonne, designer of the top she is wearing.
Here we meet up with Jenny (jelie3110), one of Lena
's Swedish girl friends, and Jenny's daughter and her friend. We spent most the day just wandering about, catching a show here and there, people watching and of course the girls had to shop and try on cloths! If you like to people watch, this is a good place for it. Not every one in costum works at the festival. Many people dress up just to come here, but not everyone gets it just right. Most of them do have the right clothing for the time period, but some not so much! I think some people use this place as a reason to try out halloween costumes. hahahaha You never know what you might see here!
A few hours later, I received a call that Andrea and Alex were on their way and should be arriving soon. After they purchased their tickets to enter the festival, I met them just inside the front gate with hugs all around.
Me, Andrea & Alex
It so good to see them again! We had such a great time the first time we got together, so we were really looking forward to spending the day with them again! Our first stop was at one of the taverns to get a few drinks. Next we walked to one of the stages where Lena & Jenny were watching a comic sword fighting show called Hack & Slash. These guys are great and a must see if you ever get a chance. After the show was over, Jenny and her two girls had to leave, so Alex, Andrea, Lena
and I had the rest of the day to wander the village, get some food and have a few more drinks. We walked through the giant maze getting lost and finding all the dead ends, then stopped to watch the jousters, but it was hot, so into the dark and somewhat cheesy museum of strange stuff. (I forgot the actual name) We watched the sword swallower for a short time until Andrea couldn’t watch anymore, then we ended at another stage where a hypnotist was making people do crazy stuff on stage just through the power of suggestion.
A small sample of some of the food available.
We spent the rest of the day wandering around and snacking on all the food that is available.
One of our favorite things about the festival is all the yummy food you can get there. Turkey legs, pork, turkey, chicken or beef sandwiches, pizza, Belgium waffles, fish & chips, crab cakes, fried cheese, pickles, nuts, fried ice cream, baked potatoes, and almost anything on a stick; steak on a stick, pork chop on a stick, cheesecake on a stick, sausage on a stick, fried macaroni and cheese on a stick, etc…Of course there are a few taverns and pubs at the festival, along with an oyster bar.
They have elephant rides and free pony rides for the kids, and many games for all ages including a drench the wench booth, a rock wall to climb, a walk through maze, knife throwing, arrow shooting, axe throwing, a rope ladder climb and many others.
A big part of the festival is all the shows that seem to be going on from the time the gates open until they close. Comedians, inprov stage shows, sword fighting, fully armored knights jousting on horseback, juggling and acrobatics, live bands and even a sword swallower.
We stayed at the festival until almost closing time, and then Alex and Andrea followed us back to our house where we cooked some burgers and brats on the grill, and spent the evening talking and watching a movie. We had a great time and hope to get together with them again before they move back to Germany.
If any of you want to come to Annapolis and see the Maryland Renaissance Festival, we will be more than happy to show you around.
This place would even be great for a full size TB Meet Up. There are plenty of taverns we could invade, and for those who do not drink, there are lots of other things to do and see. It’s always a good time at the Maryland Renaissance festival!
