Leaving Athens ..... Hello Mykonos....
October 27, 2008
David and I shopped a little in the morning and stopped by the ferry office to check on any ferries to Mykonos.... We were surprised to find the next ferry would leave the next day in the afternoon and would take hours..... We decided to fly.... but it meant we would arrive in the late night so we wanted a hotel in advance. We went to a travel agent, Nikos Metaxas: at Acropolis of Athens Travel... (30 kanigos st: athens: phone..210 38 18 553 or 210 3805914 .. fax #: 210 3840168 ... email: 1X09@ath.forthnet.gr .... ) This wonderful man picked up the phone and called about 9 places until he found an excellent place for 50 Euros that was on Mykonos island.
.. He also booked our plane for us. How nice that everything was done for us. We went onto the internet and updated some on travbuddy. We went out to a nice meal and went back to Oscar Hotel and collected the suitcases. We rode the Metro to the airport and caught an Olympic Air flight ...
We arrived at 9:30 ..... The airport was quite small. We decided to rent a car and spoke to the lady at Stix Rent a car. We got a Smart car!!!!!! Hooray! . ... I love them .... They look like a little bread box on the streets..... We got it for 30 Euro a day....
We drove to Mykonos Town to the motel.... Then it got a little stressful.... for the life of us we could not find the public parking lot. .... (Mykonos town is pedestrian only.... except for lost tourists, taxies, motorcycles, delivery vans and police vehicles) We kept finding lots but they said if we parked there the licence plate would be removed.... (We don't even know what that means but it sounds inconvenient....) finally we were able to locate the lot.... We were hungry and tired and had a 8 block walk into town with our suitcase/backpacks .... to find the motel mr Metaxas booked for us.... (interestingly it was held with our name only and no credit card)... We wandered and asked around another 45 minutes or so.... yeah,.... we were really hungry by then....
We found the hotel, Hotel Matogianis and were delighted with the room. It had a round circle in the ceiling that had indirect blue lighting and a matching circle on the head board. .. it was really unique... We were so pleased .. (The girl said all of the rooms had a variance of the lights...) .... it was conveniently located in the middle of town although it did not have a water view..... It was amazingly quiet at night .... it was a busy town so that was great! The lady at the hotel was expecting us because of the travel agent phone call.... she gave us the room but we did not register or give a credit card. She suggested we go to a local restaurant nearby that is owned by twin brothers... We easily found it and stood outside talking to a group of people who were eating outside. It was interesting that one person was visiting for two weeks from the Hamptons... one lived full time in Athens but was visiting for a few months, one lived full time on Mykonos and the last was an American who lived in greece for the last 30 years. ... They were quite a happy group and fun to talk to. We got seated inside and had a fabulous meal. We both ordered the special of the night that was lemon beef ... we got the red house wine (excellent !!!) and the waitress brought us a liquor that had cinnamon and honey. We talked to a couple of people at the bar as we left. One was a man from South Africa named Ben. He too had eaten there and was very happy with it. It was about 1AM.... the people were still sitting outside and we talked to them again before we headed to the motel.
