Driving around Mykonos.... AKA...Yikes... where did the road go?

Heart breaker of the future!...his mom was so proud.

After the Oxi parade, David and I went down to our little Smart car to start touring the island....  David insisted on driving straight up above Mykonos Town on the narrow, cliff lined streets just to see where they went....and:.. what a surprize.... they dead ended..  I sort of thought they might when I saw the concern on the faces of the locals as we went by....  We found actually several dead ends... the only way back was past the same people... at least they knew we got turned around OK....  LOL.... several times it was exciting to turn around... David had to use the hand break as the car rolled when he was switching gears...  I offered to get out to supervise but he only took me up on it one time...

Once we got off the mountain.

Geraniums in the alleyway
... (whew!)   That was exciting... Once down,  we started out without consulting our map or worrying....  We went on the theory that it's an island... even if we are lost we wouldn't be too lost too long... We managed to find quite a few places where there was a perfect paved road then it abruptly stopped and it was a rutted rock heap road... The Smart car did us proud and we slowly traveled to the next paved area....  We went over most of the island.   We loved how all of the houses were white but some deviated to other colors for trim.   I got really into the other colors and tried to photograph as many as possible ... from the moving car of course...   So quite a few photos have other cars or got blurred.

David was a great sport and slowed when he knew to....

We got to one area and went to a little place to have a cup of coffee.  It was so cute.  Outside there was a nice little harbor and a bunch of goats ...   Inside the place was charming... but the lady who waited on us was impatient and totally grumpy.  Surely she wasn't Greek!  but she was... and was apparently embroiled in an arguement with her son and we got the brunt of it with her impatience and rudeness..  We got a cup of Greek coffee and sat looking out the window as we drank it.   It had the makings of being a perfect place except for the lady. We drank as quickly as we could.  She didn't bring us water with the coffee so it was a little harder to drink.   We didn't tip her....  I am certain she didn't care.  She just wanted us out.

Most of the Mykonos roads were either up hills or down.  All of the houses were charming with their gleaming white wash and bright windows and doors.   We found one sign that said ancient castle..  We think we found it... (mostly walls ...) but we were unable to find any signage that said anything about the castle....  but I took pictures anyway.   Next to the castle site was a great old church...  The view from the area was stunning.

Great Blog, Sylvia! I'm really enjoying reading about your Greek adventures! I had similar driving experiences in Corfu! Lot's of dead ends and roads so narrow you had to back up to let another car by! Nice pictures you guys!

Thanks so much Rudolph... Ha Ha...O Rhodes it must have been common for a tourist to peel around the corner and wind up looking at the clothesline...

another view... isnt this pretty

Mykonos is a friendly and fun place.   We wanted to make sure we got to see the Oxi Parade on the old dock waterfront.  We went down early to check on the area the parade would be.  The place was humming....     school age children were dressed in their colors (grey skirt or slacks with a white shirt and a scarf... for example) ... all of the ages and groups had a different type of uniform.  There were a group of teenagers in traditional  clothes.  They were so colorful and proud.   Then, of course there were the tiny guys in their little outfits... Heartbreakers of the future!  All of this was at 9 AM and the parade was not supposed to start until Noon.

We ate breakfast at one of the cafes.

Oxi day parade... (yeah, that's what we saw...)
... It was fun to watch people getting ready....  Everyone had a job.  One man walked up and down the beach picking up trash.....  and in typical friendly Greece, a friend walked with him and they talked.....  Fishermen walked by carrying clear plastic bags of sardines... (teeny ones) ...  later another went by with larger fish....    We asked about the parade where we ate earlier and the manager said he would save us a place and indicated a set of chairs.... he said to come back at 11:30.....

We strolled to the end of the docks and were surprized to see a huge pelican walking around.  It seemed quite tame.  Apparently it has learned that people don't hurt it and it can get a hand out occasionally.

school girls in parade
I went into one of the restrooms and when I came out it strolled in... The attendant was really upset about it.....  she tried and tried to turn it around..(without getting too close) finally it came out.   She poured water into it's huge mouth..... She did it several times so apparently it is a pal of hers...    I was horrified when a cruise ship tourist near me  commented to me that it liked water and really likes chocolate too.... What an IDIOT.  (yeah, I may be a tourist but call myself a traveler instead... to differentiate me from people like this lady...)

We walked the back streets of the town looking at shops....  It was surprizing that many were closed.  It is so late in the season and most of the cruise ships were stopping their tours.

pretty alley/walkways
...   cruise ships provide many thousands of visitors who are on the island for 3-6 hours.... and then they are gone....  So the cruisers did their eating or shopping quickly before they left....  People on Mykonos seemed very down about the end of the season.  The people we talked to said it wasn't a good year.   The numbers of visitors and sales were reduced so it was a hard year.

Everyone seemed to be emotionally involved with the American election and the stock market problems.  We quickly found it was good to be simply neutral about the election as it was a "hot"  and emotional topic and there were quite a few people who thought they knew a great deal about US politics and did not...

Oxi day decorations... (they took them down that afternoon)
.  but talking to them  was difficult as we tried  to explain history of a few years ago....  it was better to agree and move on.  Even in traveling we have learned to avoid talking about politics...  we don't want to offend and we  don't feel emotional and passionate about American politics.  ...  it doesn't matter who wins/loses ... in four years there is another election with millions of mailers, ads on TV and promises.....  on and on....  It's just not good to get too wrapped up in it... We have never missed voting and know every candidate has good to contribute...

We got back to the dock area and were shocked at the crowds......  the manager of the restaurant was true to his word and held the table.

we came up that..and back down that
...  after ordering appetizers and drinks we realized we would not be able to see the parade because of the throngs of people.... locals and tourists alike....   we had to be satisfied with occasional glimpses of things....  alas.... we had looked forward to it so much.

Oxi day (pronounced O-hee ...)   (it means "no") is a national holiday because it is the day that the government of Greece (at 6:30 AM) told Italy it could not occupy Greece during world war II.   The denial was said in one word "Oxi".  At 8:30, Greece was invaded.  Greece suffered a great deal and was gripped in a deadly war.... they really helped the allies....The resistance had many heroes and martyrs...  In Greece there are many statues and memorials regarding the resistance.

I love this shot!
David and I had not heard of Oxi day until we were coming and read quite a bit about it.  Thank you, Greece, for saying Oxi.

At 9 PM we went back to the "Twins" restaurant.  The outside table was available and we were happy to take it....   (we try not to mind cigarette smoke but as non-smokers we do notice it.... )  Our waitress from the night before came out although she was not the person who seated us.  She told us that she had lived in Athens until she was 26.  One day she looked up at the sky between the buildings and could not see blue...she could only see smog.  She decided then and there it wasn't a healthy place to live.

castle doors
She moved to Mikonos.  She has a 7 year old son and loves living on the island.  She said for this Christmas they are visiting her mom in Athens but her home is Mikonos.  (Over and over in Mikonos we hear of how healthy it is to live here....  we believe it ....)  Again, we got the special..... chicken this time.... with house red wine (Beautiful, bright red...) .....  and chocolate mousse ...... and an appertief ....   we finished about midnight and walked back to our hotel ......   Another great day!
