Athens: ...
October 25, 2008
We were so excited to be back in Athens: Although it's a large city it is very easy to use their public transportation to travel. We decided to go to the Parthenon and explore that area and the Acropolis Museum. We bought the tickets and went in the side area near the agora. It was amazing that there were so many items that were stacked and not used... Over the years the Acropolis went through many wars and the area changed hands many times. We found that the lower area had many things being improved. A small temple was being rebuilt and it was partially completed. In the side of the Acropolis (this shocked us!!) was a cave looking place. A small placard said there was a small chapel being reconstructed. It was Christian chapel and a small picture was on a sign to show what it contained.
(We have pictures of the plaque and will publish them...) We had never noticed the triangle shaped hole in the side of the acropolis base before. We are hoping when we return to Greece it will be completed so we can go inside.
When we got to the top of the Acropolis we were really disappointed to see that much of the Parthanon is enclosed in scaffolding. I recall that it was in scaffolding just before the Olympics and part of the scaffolding was taken down so that people could view it. Apparently they are now getting the repairs done. In the past, two different repairs were done. The most recent was 1913 (yikes... need to look this up... a guess... I forgot to write it down...).... and now the repairs must be made to correct the earlier work as well as the problems of aging with weather. We cannot argue that the work needs to be done ... The cranes were very visable .... After the work is done it will be wonderful.... They have studied and found there were more columns than previously thought and they are adding them all. It will be sturdier and more true to the original construction.
A second problem for us was that the Acropolis museum was closed. It comes out a wonderful new museum is being completed on the ground level. All of the pieces are being transferred to it and it will be open in 2009. Hopefully by then the British Museum and the Acropolis Museum will see the benefits of returning the marbles that are from the top of the Parthanon. It will be lovely if they can meet somewhere in the middle and work together. (We are thinking good thoughts regarding this.... )
***We decided to take a little train that ran through the downtown area..... \it was called the sunshine train and it started at aiolou and andrianou street corner. It was a 35 minute train ride.... I wanted to ride in the very back of the train ... the very, very last car... . what we didn't realize was the last two cars ran empty so we were conspicuously displayed at the back. The train ran past the tower or the winds. temple of zeus, hadrian's arch, herodes atticus theater, parthenon, propylaia, the agora ... All of the things we were supposed to go by we did but they were sooooo far away from us and the trees at the side blocked most views although the announcer kept talking and telling us what we should be seeing....... what it didn't mention was it went through the crowded shopping area and the restaurant pedestrian areas... People squeezed themselves to the side to let the cars pass.... and there we sat in the very last car... .. red faced and mortified that everyone had to move for the train. We finally saw the humor and started laughing... What an experience. ... We did get a good laugh out of it but ......... never again......
We wandered and looked for a place to eat. We finally decided on a small place in the Plaka. What a blast we had! Two men were playing instrurments and singing. A table of older ladies were joining in singing. They were having such a wonderful time..... Another table of women got up and danced the traditional dances.... (It came out they were from Norway)..... They also knew the songs and were joining in. It was so perfect! I have never wanted to speak Greek more than this night. ..... One Greek man kept dancing by jumping up and down... what was that all about.... but he was having fun .... He would dance a few steps then jump in one place really high.... he didn't try it when anyone else was dancing.... The kind of dancing he was doing couldn't have other people in the aisles. David and I both really had a wonderful time watching everyone. Just before the five ladies left the restaurant a man came in selling roses. David bought five red buds and we had the waiter take them to their table. They were so pleased. It really completed both their night and ours as we wanted to let them know how much we appreciated their singing. Because there was a language barrier I just blew kisses and they understood that and they said thanks.... One of the ladies got up and started dancing... She taught the Norway table a few new moves. After everyone left we finally walked back to our ship around 1:30.... yikes...... we had a really great day though.....

Sunshine Express.....
We decided to take a little train that ran through the downtown area..... it was called the sunshine Express and it started at aiolou and andrianou street corner. (Agora square)
It was a 35 minute train ride.... I wanted to ride in the very back of the train ... the very, very last car.... what we didn't realize was the last two cars ran empty so we were conspicuously displayed. Adults didn't seem to get angry ... we don't know why.... and we were envied by all kids under 10 years old.... but ... it was still embarassing.
The train ran past the Tower of the Winds. Temple of Zeus, Hadrian's Arch, Herodes Atticus Theater, Parthenon, Propylaia, the Agora ... All of the things we were supposed to go by we did ...but... they were sooooo far away from us and the trees at the side blocked most views although the announcer kept talking and telling us what we should be seeing....... What the brochure didn't mention was: it went through the crowded shopping area and the restaurant pedestrian areas...
People obligingly squeezed themselves to the side to let the cars pass.... and there we sat in the very last car... .. red faced and mortified that everyone had to move for the train. We finally saw the humor and started laughing... What an experience.... We did get a good giggle out of it but ......... never again......
This cost 5 Euro each.... We can't recommend it although if we had some children with us it would have amused them to ride it... probably.
