The last time I was in Indonesia was 8 years ago. I came back just to show my girlfriend and best friends the country I was raised in. I saw Indonesia with other eyes, with tourist’s eyes. I was confronted with the social and economic problems and the intolerance of the radical movement. But I also was confronted with the beauty of this country and the kindness of it’s people. Indonesia, I wish you the best!

The road to Bromo

The huge male fruit bats

On the way to Bromo we passed Batu. Batu is a popular local tourist resort in East Java. It is a city with cool climate with many agricultural businesses. We visited an apple orchard. They kept several huge fruit bats in a cage there.

The way to Bromo was difficult to find. I bought an Indonesian street map in Holland, so I thought I knew the way and said that they were taking the wrong road. But the drivers knew better, so we drove up on the wrong mountain side.

The road was steep and the left side of the road was scary steep (they drive left in Indonesia). We drove up and up just to find out that there is a sand road to Bromo only accessible by Four-wheel drive. So we went down again and took the good good, almost 3 hours lost for nothing.
