The macaque domain

The last time I was in Indonesia was 8 years ago. I came back just to show my girlfriend and best friends the country I was raised in. I saw Indonesia with other eyes, with tourist’s eyes. I was confronted with the social and economic problems and the intolerance of the radical movement. But I also was confronted with the beauty of this country and the kindness of it’s people. Indonesia, I wish you the best!

The macaque domain

We stopped in a mountain resort Grojogan Sewu in Tawangmangu. This is a place famous to locals, there are hardly any foreign tourists here, I’ve been here several times in my youth. The main attraction is the 100 m high waterfall. The forest is full of macaques. They like to steal food from tourists, especially tourists who are new here. So keep everything out of sight in a bag.

Two elderly men came to us with their horses, asking us whether we’d like to have a horse ride. They spoke a Javanese dialect I didn’t understand at all, so it was hard for me to explain that we’d rather walk. Poor people, at their age they should retire instead of working, but no work means no food…

After the walk we returned to the car, there’s bad news, yesterday night it rained heavily and the only bridge that connect this mountain side to the other had collapsed. So we have to go back and make a ride around the mountain, that will take at least 2 hours more than we had planned, but hey, we’d see more of Indonesia this way ;)
