Reason one not to drink the water in Kathmandu

Exchanged rooms at Kathmandu Guest House for my final day in Kathmandu and Nepal.  Spent part of the morning repacking my gear for the next leg of my journey.  Going through everything I tried to determine what could be left behind, tossed, cleaned up before heading to Hong Kong.

Later in the morning I met Mark, Dave, Dom, Rachel P, Rachel B, and India (another gal we met in Kathmandu) to visit Swayambhunath Stupa (also referred to as Monkey Temple due to the clusters of monkeys that make their home at the the stupa).  We were originally thinking of going by rickshaw but when we learned that they would not go out there we decided to walk instead.  It was quite the interesting walk outside the Thamel area.

Swayambhunath Stupa
Fewer Westerners, fewer touts.  More local Nepalese people and stores.  Still crazy and chaotic in the streets.  Crossed the small river/stream running through Kathmandu (or the trash repository as it is apparently used).  Saw one local casually dump a bag of garbage over the side as he strolled across the bridge into the fetid pile of rubbish and sewage in the water below.  And the smell here was rancid.  Plainly exhibited why one does not drink the tap water in Nepal without first treating it in some fashion (or just drinking bottled water).

Swaymbhunath was impressive although touristy with loads of people hawking cheap tourist knockoffs.  And if it wasn't so hazy could have had some amazing views of Kathmandu from the hilltop vista where Swayambhunath sits.

Buddha's Eyes painted on Swayambhunath Stupa
..alas.  Swayambhunath is an ancient Buddhist holy site dating back at least to 6th century CE.  Besides the stupa there are any number of other temples, monasteries, shrines, statues, and other buildings dotting the site.  Unfortunately there was some restoration work going on about the stupa while we were there so the photos weren't the greatest.  But it was interesting to see this and compare it to the smaller version I had seen down in the city a few weeks prior.

We walked back to the guesthouse by the same route we came and relaxed for the remainder of the afternoon enjoying some beers in the courtyard.  For dinner we went to Helena's Restaurant with a significant portion of the gang and then hit up a bar for some music and more drinks.  I didn't stay up too late as I had to go back and finish the re-packing job I had started earlier.  Tomorrow flying back to Bangkok and then on to Hong Kong.  Time is truly flying.
