Passing through Yichang and heading west we first reached Gezhou Dam on the northwest outskirts of the city. In itself this is a large dam across the Yangtze which passes across the three channels of the river here divided by two small islands. The ship channel that we passed through meant that we could not see the larger sections of the dam.
We had a pretty substantial wait for other ships before we passed through the ship lock. In fact by the time we made it through it was time for lunch. We headed back to the dining area for some more food. Have I mentioned yet that I am loving Chinese meals and the family dining style that accompanies most Chinese meals. I'm even becoming mostly proficient at using my chopsticks. Nothing like forced necessity being the best teacher.
We went pretty quickly through the meal though because when we passed through the lock we were entering the first of the three gorges that gives the Three Gorges region its name. But I'll talk about Xiling Gorge in the next entry.
