Day Three...The Arch!

Saturday morning we made a quick run down to Arkansas and then began our journey back to STL. We ran a little late getting to the city, partly because White Castle was sooooooooo slow in their service. Melanie hadn't been to a White Castle in a few years and so she had to go since there aren't any out west. But, it turned out to be a good thing that White Castle was slow because Barack Obama was having a rally in the park right under the STL Arch...which was exactly where we were going. Afterall, you can't come to STL without going up in the Arch. And so, by the time we arrived, the 100,000+ Obama supporters at the rally had thinned out. Oh, we also stopped by Jilly's Cupcake Cafe and bought a couple of HUGE YUMMY cupcakes!

Our hotel at the Hyatt was only a 20 minute walk from the Arch but we elected to pay for parking and do the Arch before checking into the hotel.

As it turns out, timing was everything on this day. The line for going to the top of the arch was super long, and we were at the end of it. And then one of the security men made an announcement that if we went to the south entrance there wasn't any line. We quickly made our way to that end of the arch and was inside with our tickets in a matter of minutes. It had been about 15 years since I last went to the top of the Arch, so it was almost a new experience for me, too. We spent a good half hour at the top taking pictures. When we left, the lines on both entrances were super, super long. We spent a little more time in the park taking more photos. We also sat down and ate our cupcakes directly under the arch.

We checked into our hotel, the Hyatt Regency downtown, around 5:00.

After getting off the elevator...a few more steps to the top of the arch.
This is a great spot because the Hyatt is part of STL Union Station where they have hundreds of shops, bars, and restaurants inside. We were going to visit the Landing down on the river, another hot spot in STL, but decided to stay at Union Station in case we had too many drinks. We first went into Hard Rock Cafe to eat, then changed our minds and went to a seafood restaurant close by. We shared a calamari appetizer and the swordfish entrĂ©e, because neither of us were too hungry. I also had a few glasses of some great red wine and was feeling not too bad by the time we left!

After dinner we went to Maggie's Irish pub and watched some games on the TVs while nursing some drinks. I can't even remember what we were drinkning. Leaving there, we then found a store inside Union Station that was just closed but the guy working let us in so we could buy a bottle of Grey Goose for the big game the next day. Once we had our goose it was time to get our butts to bed....tomorrow would be another early morning.
