Renting a Jeep

Cozumel is an island just off the coast of Cancun. The four things to do here are diving, shopping, beach and ruins.

We rented a jeep for the day. I think this is a great idea because you can get away from the tourist port area and explore the island. In total, it cost us about $75 for the day including gas. Once we got off the ship we went to the Hertz rental office in the port area. You need to know how to drive a manual transmission as that is all you will get. It took us about 45 minutes to square away the paperwork and for them to bring the jeep around.

We decided to head to southeast, directly across the island on Av. Denito Juarez to go to the beaches on the other side away from all the tourists. The drive took about 20 minutes to cross the island to Playa Morena. The beaches on this side are not crowded at all and there are a couple places to get a bite to eat.

The beaches here are very similar to SE Florida.

On the way back towards San Miguel, we stopped at the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio. These are newly discovered ruins but not that well preserved. There are 3 or 4 good temples and houses that are worth seeing especially if you have never seen Mayan ruins.

We headed south towards the dive areas of Palancar and Santa Rosa, but ended up stopping at a beach club. These are definitely tourist only areas. They charge you to get in. As little as $10, to as much as $25, depending if you want food and alcohol included. We just wanted a beach chair and a towel. These beach clubs are packed with cruise passengers since there are 3-5 huge ships in Cozumel at any given time.

To give you an idea of what the beach clubs are like: Stacey was dozing in her beach chair when a drunk, lobster burned, obnoxious guy hits her on the head with his sandal and says "Come on, we gotta go, the ship is leaving!" Our ship wasn’t leaving until 3am. Bunch of drunk idiots.

Shannon and I rented a wave-runner and had a blast riding around in the ocean.

After the beach club we drove around San Miguel and then returned the jeep. We walked around the shopping areas just outside the pier for about a half-hour. Shannon bought some stuff and we bought a magnet for the fridge.
