I was definitely apprehensive the morning of our planned day at Kennywood. The forecast was calling for rain all day, and the steady downpour with occasional thunder and lightning outside my window did little to soothe my fears. Our arrival at Kennywood's parking lot with the rain still falling did not help. (Kennywood has parking for $5 or free; if you get there early enough, the free parking is only a minute or two more of a walk than the paid parking.
The rain persisted for approximately two more hours (neither of us worried about a watch) and then petered out. This proved to be quite a blessing as it kept the crowds down for not only the morning hours but the whole day. We were able to walk straight on to several rides, short waits for the others. In all, we rode 30 rides including all four roller coasters, three of them two times each (the Jackrabbit, the Racers, and the Thunderbolt). While I have been on most of the rides during previous trips (I went every year while I was in college with the marching band), I did fit in two new ones: the Pitt Fall and Garfield's Nightmare.
The Pitt Fall takes you up fairly high and then drops you, so you descend much faster than you went up. Just before the drop though, you get a fantastic view of either the park or land across the river. Garfield's Nightmare is a tame boat ride with 3-D effects thrown in. I enjoyed reading the comic strips that set up each scene. I think we had our longest wait here (or else the third time we rode the Exterminator, an indoor ride with spins and short drops), and it was a half hour maximum.
We also caught the tail end of a diving show, played some Skeeball, and indulged in amusement park food (batter-dipped Oreos were a new experience for me). All in all, a good day at the park :)
