Lower Antelope Canyon

    There are two canyons, the Upper Antelope Canyon and the Lower Antelope Canyon. Our first visit was to the Lower Antelope Canyon which, of the two, is the more challenging hike. This canyon is not for small children or anyone with a walking or balance issue. Not to worry though because the Upper Antelope Canyon has pretty much the same scenery but is an easy walk that anyone can do. The location is north eastern Arizona. It is a very scenic drive from Flagstaff. We arrived shortly after noon to Page and had a little problem finding the road to the canyon. You can get tours that leave out of Page but I think that is a big mistake. The Canyons are on the Navajo reservation and if you go there they will give you a fantastic tour with lots of stories of their culture and history. When we got there I did not see a canyon and no wonder. It is hidden in the ground. As we walked towards the slot I did not think that it was possible to fit in but then I saw people disappearing so I knew it must be possible. I got in without a problem. The canyon is a short hike but very strenuous as there are many steep ladders to climb down and narrow passageways to get through. If you are up to it though it is really the experience of a lifetime. The hike is only a 1/2 mile but due to the difficulty allow plenty of time at the end you can climb a long latter and walk back above ground or you can go back the way you came on the inside. Most people go back on the inside for one last look at the scenery. Before planning a trip you need to consider the weather. If there is any chance of a flash flood you will not be able to go. Since the canyon is so narrow and there is no easy way to enter or exit, it is very dangerous if it should rain. Not many years ago 11 international travelers lost their lives in the canyon. Since then they are much more careful.  Since I think that a picture is worth a thousand words, I will stop talking and let you see for yourself.
