praying

November 15th is officially 7, 5, 3 day in Japan but most people celebrate the festival on the weekend prior to the 15th.

The festival is a day of prayer for the healthy growth of children.  Children aged 3, 5 and 7  visit shrines with their parents to have prayers offered by priests. The festival started back in medieval times, aristocratic and samurai families celebrated the growth of infants into healthy boys and girlsin the following ways.

Boys and girls aged three stopped getting their hair shaven and were allowed to grow their hair.

Boys aged five put on hakama for the first time in public.

Girls aged seven began using obi sash to tie their kimonos instead of cords

By the Edo Period (1663-1868) the practice spread to commoners who began visiting shrines to have prayerrs offered by priests. Most girls and boys wear kimono but in recent years an increasing number of children are wearing dresses and suits. My son wore a suit. The shichi go san customs offered today evolved in the Meiji era (1868)

Parents buy chitose ame (longevity candy) for their children. The candy is shaped like a stick and comes in a bag that carries illustrations of cranes and turtles- two animals that are a symbol of long life. The candy and the bag are both expressions of parents wish that their children lead long prosperous lives. My son destroyed the bag in like two seconds trying to get to the candy so I hope that doesn't mean my son will have a short life.
