Our drive through western Greece took us to the town of Ioannina. I had heard it was a beautiful city right on a lake, and at one point I had actually wanted to stay there, but I couldnt find very little information on it on the internet. It actually worked out better to stay in Monodendri anyway.
When we pulled into town, we knew we were there at a busy time. There were cars everywhere and a bunch of teenagers who looked like they were just getting off school. There was no way we were going to make it through the town quickly at this rate, but we were not in a rush and rather looked at it as a positive thing.
After about 10 minutes, we parked our car on the side of the road right near the lake and just enjoyed the views. If there was any doubt before, we now knew that we were in a very beautiful part of the world. I have a thing for mountains and beautiful views, and Greece was not letting me down. We then continued on but found ourselves going in the opposite direction. Finally, as much as I hate to do it, we pulled off at a gas station and asked for directions. Although they seemed unsure at first, the attendants showed us the path to take. A little concerned about the accuracy of the information, we decided to give it a try. Sure enough, before we knew it we were heading north again, and once we got out of the city the traffic cleared.
We drove on for some 15 minutes before we came to the small road that would take us up to Monodendri. Having read online that the road can be unsafe (bad Greek drivers, lots of turns), I proceeded cautiously at first, but sped up once I realized that it was all hogwash. The sights there were amazing though as the road took us up to the top of the gorge. Before we knew it, we had passed through some small towns and arrived safely in Monodendri.
