Exploring Uptown...

Our building (5th and Poplar)- our balconies are the ones on the uppermost right.

Laura and I walked around Uptown today!  First we went to the federal courthouse to get some pictures of Jesse's work place here in Charlotte - plus, it's just so pretty!  It has a whole courtyard/square with landscaping and benches - even some rosebushes!

Then we just wandered randomly... we found the mini farmer's market on Trade and Tryon (but I didn't bring my purse or any money, so I'll have to go back to that later).

Then we wandered to the EpiCentre, which was mostly closed seating areas that looked like they would be drinking places later on tonight.  But downstairs there was a fudgery, which of course we went into... please! we couldn't just pass it by.

.. and the very nice guy behind the counter told us that samples were free.  :)  The fudge WAS good (I tried Turtle, Laura tried Nut), but I think my tiny bite was enough for me... so rich!

We kept wandering... passed lots of cool buildings.  When we started getting hot, we saw a sign on the Mint Museum of Art that said "Free admission Tuesdays" so we went in to see what we could see.  Mostly weird modern art, but there were some cool things too.  And it was free and air conditioned, so what the heck?  The gift shop turned out to be the coolest part!  They had neat wooden carvings in different shapes that turned out to be puzzles (hard to describe), cool little handmade, kiln-fired vases and egg separaters that looked like little trolls or something with their mouths open, and the best part - weird masks with eye holes so that when you put the mask on, your eyes show through for a really freaky effect!  We loved those and took several (illegal?) pictures!

After the Mint Museum we headed to the public library, which was 3 stories and neat looking inside, but didn't seem to have any young adult/teen books.

On the 3rd floor Laura and I ran into a woman who reminded me of a fatter version of Joan Cusack - she talked just like her!  She told us to try ImagineOn a few blocks away, which turned out to be the children's library... also 3 stories and very, very cool inside.  Best children's library I've ever seen by far.  There were things to play on everywhere, and a huge mobile hanging from the ceiling that had all kinds of things on it (I think I remember a bicycle?).  However, all the Twilight books were checked out, which is what Laura was looking for, so we just wandered aimlessly through the sci-fi/fantasy section perusing books until we got hungry.

Found our way back home pretty easily, walking through the Settler's cemetery on the way.

It's right next door to our condo building.  The graves are so old that most of the headstones are hard to read.  According to the ones we COULD read, it looked like the burial dates were around the late 1700's to early 1800's.  Very cool, and not creepy at all.  What IS kind of ..... unusual.... is that this cemetery is where most of the 5th and Poplar residents (as well as the other surrounding condo complex residents) walk their dogs!  So far I've been taking Cassidy to the little "pet area" in our complex, but that place only has a few feet of mulch, no grass, and it weirds her out and smells like the perfume used in cheap cat litter.  Something tells me I'll be letting her poop by the graves before you know it.... lol.

Made a quick stop at Harris Teeter on the first floor of our building (can't get more convenient than that!) and made some good ol' Kraft mac for lunch.  :)
