The Solovetsky Archipelago is in the Onega Gulf of the White Sea, and its islands cover 300 sq km. Usually called Solovki, it lies 150 kms from the Arctic Circle. In the 19th cent., Solovki became an exile for notable political and religious figures, but its most tragic period was the Soviet times. After closure for 70 years, the monastery reopened as a place of pilgrimage. Its museum, St. Nicholas Church, Assumption Cathedral and Transfiguration Cathedral are all beautifully restored.
