a steady green spot in an eroded landscape

this magnificent country between Europe and Asia has a lot to offer: friendly people, magnificent nature, old cities like Istanbul and a lot of culture! I travelled through Turkey for 3 weeks, starting in Istanbul and then further to Cappadocia. Next I did a short stop at Konya to visit the Mevlana museum and then headed further to lake Egirdir. One of the last stops on main land was Olympos, and I finished by doing a 3-day boat trip along the mediterrean coast. life is wonderful in Turkey!

a steady green spot in an eroded landscape

This beautiful valley is located near Güzelyurt, about a 2 hour- drive from Göreme. The landscape is beautiful and here erosion truely scapes the surroundings. When I arrived there I didn't see the vally at first because it was all the way down, duuh!;). after a descent into the valley, I followed the path next to the river and discovered some great spots, an old church and caves. In the valley, the river is surrounded by trees which results in a green spot in the debts of Cappadocia. The second part of the hike is in my opinion the most beautiful one because you have astonishing views and you see how the river follows his way through the valley.  While walking we were accompanied by one of the local dogs that showed us the way.

While I was picknicking, some charming ladies came by and gave me some fresh tomatoes picked up from their land! This was truely traditional Turkey.

The valley is about 14 km long and can be reached by bus. I stopped my walk by turning right over a bridge which brought me in a little village, unfortunately I forgot the name (Selime?). There was a very old monastery that could be seen carved in the rocks and formed by erosion. The evening was announced by the call for prayer that filled the air as an echo.

The minivan drove me back to Göreme.  In Istanbul I had heard there was a footballgame Belgium - Turkey so I looked for a bar in Göreme with big screen and watched the game with some belgian and turkish people.  Also met a few people from the hostel there.  Had a splendid night and the result appeared to be a tie : 1 - 1.  Belgians and Turks shook hands and had a toast on the evening and good times.
