our guesthouse club africa.

After a 10 hr flight from amsterdam to jo-burg, i arrived in the early morning on jan smuts airport. After i was picked up we went to the guesthouse "club africa", near the airport. It took some time to get used to the fact that the traffic was differend then holland. The guesthouse was located on a former old airfield, on the terrain there was the house of the owner and a small building with for bedrooms and a central kitchen( used for drinking a beer after late arrival from work) .There was a swimming pool and a outside bar.It also had a golf driving range, located on the old grass runway of the airfield, behind the guesthouse.

After a quick cup of coffee and change of clothes it was time to go to the airport. We had to got to the maintenance area security to get my badge.

My first impression when i entered the gate was that just outside of the gate a lot of local black africans where sitting and waiting for what???. They told me that the where waiting for work. On the technical side a big building was constructed and if they need people the manager was picking up some people out of the line. The reasons for needing people was a lots of work at the time, people did'nt show up or an accident happend and the  person could not work at that time.OK i was in africa, different than europe, and difficult to understand for me using the people like this.

Ok i had my badge and up to the plane. My firts impression of the plane when i saw it standing in the corner of the hangar was "how long will it take to get this baby back in the air with passengers".

The plane was an former South african airforce transport/spy plane and we want it to bring it back to a passengers plane. The most of the work was done by the south african airways technical department, the training school and the locals for the dirty work. Again i was not happy how these people had to work with paintstripping without personal safety eguipment.Sometimes i had a big discussion with the manager to get better equipment for these people for work and safety.

When we where not working in the hangar , we where looking for parts in the surrounding area of johannesburg, and gave me the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful land of africa. We visit some local markets for the own needs, watching soccer in the pubs with the locals during the africans nation cup and enjoying the restaurants for nice meals. An african  colleague had a private plane and we took a ride in the sky to see africa from the air.

After 5 months ,i was home for 3 months the plane was ready for it's first flight. After a long take off roll the plane was finally where it belongs, up in the sky.A lot of test work had to be performed ,crew had to be trained and it took a lot of time to get the plane ready for the long flight home to Amsterdam.
