This is one time where I should have added a day to my trip, and spent an entire day in Maine. But with gas at $4 a gallon and hotels having unpredictable price and quality, I was still at the time determined to stick to my schedule. But little side trips continued slowing me down somewhere.
To get to Maine, everyone has to drive through New Hampshire, so what the NH state government has done, was make that 20 mile stretch of freeway a toll road. They charge like 30 cents or something, and make a fortune. This area of the country is plagued with toll roads, and even though they're usually for just a little, with the cost of gas it can seriously hurt.
So in falling behind schedule, the trip to Kennebunkport got the axe and I only went to Funtown, Maine.
Funtown has Excalibur. It's huge! The park itself is nice and spread out, has like three car rides. One of the car rides you have to go up and down stairs over the track, and there are a few other rides in the middle as well, which means nobody in a wheelchair can get to them. One of the things I noticed when I opened my car door in the parking lot there were tons of bugs. I arrived late and only had an hour to explore the park before it closed, but was still able to see all I wanted. The guy at the gate even tried to talk me out of coming in, but I didn't want to stay another day.
One thing I noticed about New England is that it hasn't been over run by the big chains. They have them, but they are much harder to find. You won't get the Walmart Home Depots and others shoved in your face, which makes it nice. You will also find more mom and pop motels here too. I stayed at one, in a room that had five sides.
