On July 4, 2008 I had the opportunity to drive back from North Carolina to my home in California . Instead of driving straight back like I did on the way to NC, I planned a long road trip to see as much of the US as possible. It came out to 31 days, 10,000 miles, and the experience of a lifetime. My main destinations were theme parks, but I made other stops as well. You never know what you will find along the road

Adventureland

So Adventureland is a theme park near Des Moines. The park is nice but reeks of architectural plagiarism, which you can see in the video. The entrance and Main Street are incredibly familiar, especially when you walk under the train station to get to it. There is a big river they don't have boats on any more, but it is fronted by a New Orleans and old west section. In the middle of the park is a contemporary restaurant with a stage that comes up out of the ground. So they pretty much stole somebody else's idea when it comes to theme parks. It also has a few original ideas, including a chapel with religious music shows. They have a ride called the Underground, where you listen to a formerly animated prospector say something you can't understand and watch his mouth barely move, then board a rollercoaster train that slowly travels past several mining scenes.

Is it a dark ride with lifts, or a rollercoaster without drops? Their looping coaster was sadly closed, and their wooden rollercoaster in the back was closed for the majority of the morning. The ride operator at the entrance was practically laying on the ground when I tried asking him if it would open, but he wasn't interested in customer service. About this time is when I went to Trainland and the casino. When I came back it was open, so I was lucky enough to ride. Overall, it was a nice park, except for the sleeping guy at the coaster entrance, but if they have enough imagination to steal such an obvious park design they could have come up with something more original.

When I moved to Iowa in 1995, I noticed the similarities, too, and built a webpage on my site with some comparison photos:
